the growing demand for anime is one of the main reasons why Japanese-language content accounts for such a high share of demand for foreign-language content in the United States “Attack on Titan” has become not only one of the anime series most requested, yet one of the most popular shows overall, in the US and around the world. He is currently in the middle of his final season, which has pushed him to exceptional levels of demand.
Not far behind “Attack on Titan” is “My Hero Academia”, which has also become one of the most requested anime series in the United States. Both series reached a level of demand in March that only 0.2% of shows reach.
“Jujutsu Kaisenwas the third most requested anime series in the United States last month, despite releasing the final episodes a year ago. When its first season premiered in late 2020, it became a smash hit. In February, the series was renewed for a second season, set to debut in 2023. The continued high demand for this show points to a successful second season when it finally arrives.
A number of the most requested anime series are long-running classics like “Dragon Ball Z” and “Pokemon.” “A piece” has released over 1,000 episodes since its inception in 1999. No doubt hoping to meet the demand that has kept this series running for so long, Netflix has announced a planned live-action remake.

However, adapt anime successfully because live action is easier said than done. While this may open the door to an audience that normally eschews animation, it also changes an integral part of the series and risks turning the core fan base against the new series. Netflix knows these challenges firsthand from its “cowboy bebop“adjustment. Less than a month after its premiere, the live-action remake was canceled. While demand for the remake has plummeted, demand for the original anime has remained consistently superior to Netflix’s version since January.
The challenges of live-action adaptations and the success of anime series on Netflix seem to indicate that the platform should leave animated anime behind. “Attack on Titan” was the most requested show available to stream on Netflix in March. More than half of Netflix subscribers watched anime on the platform in 2021. Smart licensing and original anime series seems like a better strategy than fixing something that isn’t broken.
