‘Attack the titans‘ (‘Shingeki no Kyojin’) has quickly become one of the most iconic anime of the last decade thanks to the excellent finish of responsible animation studios and the addictiveness of its plot.
The work of Hajime Isayama brought certain innovations to the genre, which starts from a shonen approach to use but ends up surprising with many twists and a very well put together narration. But beyond the action, it also offers a lot of philosophical and moral exploration of the world that we are faced with and characters full of life and nuances that manage to get hooked on the series.
Despite the fact that we have had the so-called “final season” since 2020, it won’t be until 2023 that we see the culmination of the anime series, when the (apparently?) last chapters are released. In the meantime, Part 2 of season 4 has already concluded and it has left us with everything ready for the final fireworks of the story… so if you haven’t jumped on the anime bandwagon yet, now is the perfect time to do so.
For now the series consists of four seasons and some OVAS (direct-to-video specials) that adapt some extra chapters from the manga or visual novels. All this is not on the same platform and you have to jump a bit between one and the other, so here we are going to leave you a viewing guide for ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’ and where to see it in full in streaming.
The first season consists of a total of 25 episodes animated by Wit Studio. It starts by introducing us to the leading trio: Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlet, who live in the district of Shiganshina, a city located in the outermost area of the three walls that surround the last refuge of humanity. All they know is inside the walls, since the rest of the world has been destroyed and anyone who ventures beyond the walls will be devoured by the titans.
Their lives take a complete turn when a Colossal Titan and an Armored Titan they destroy wall Maria and the titans invade the district. After experiencing the tragedy in the first person, Eren, Mikasa and Armin enlist in the army to enter the Exploration Corps and be able to fight against the titans.
When it is revealed that Eren has the power to become a titan., things seem to change for humans, who until now had only been resisting and surviving in the face of the external threat. The hope of being able to retake the world beyond the walls seems to gain strength, but they soon discover that there are other humans with this ability and a traitor among their ranks.
The first OVAs
Of these special chapters, the one we definitely recommend watching is ‘Ilse’s diary‘ because it provides information that will later be important for the main plot, although ‘an unexpected guest‘ Y ‘complications‘ are also entertaining and serve to develop more characters in the series.
Then it would comeA choice you don’t regret‘, a special made up of two episodes that explore the past of the Captain Levi. These OVAs are only available in Japanese with English subtitles. Crunchyroll.
This season only contains 12 chapters, but it delves deeper into the main conflict of the plot and, above all, further explore the rest of the supporting characters of the Survey Corps. While Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Captain Levi, and Commander Erwin Smith dealing with the final events of the previous season, part of the Survey Corps faces a new threat when titans appear inside the walls even though the walls appear to be in perfect condition.
In addition to this, there are more possible traitors and the identity of the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan is discovered in one of the best twists of the serieswhile we are getting glimpses of the truth behind the origin of the titans and why humans live within the walls.
‘Shingeki no Kyojin: Lost Girls’
These three special chapters adapt the light novel ‘Shingeki no Kyojin: Lost Girls’, which focuses on Mikasa Ackerman Y Annie Leonhart. These chapters are not necessary for the main plot and can be skipped without problem, but they serve to explore these two female characters and their importance in the series, especially Mikasa.
Available Japanese subtitled in Crunchyroll.
These 22 chapters continue to give more prominence to other characters who until now had been secondary, such as Christa Lenz and his true identity. This part is loaded with a lot of political intrigueincluding several revelations about the royal family and the power of the Founding Titan that only humans of royal blood inherit.
Still, it also has plenty of action with new appearances from the Armored Titan, the Colossal Titan and the Beast Titan… and also the resolution of one of the great mysteries of the series when Eren and company manage to retake the Shiganshina district and finally read Grisha Jaeger’s diary.
Final Season – Part 1
From this point on in the anime, the animation was done by MAP. This part consists of 16 episodes and starts with a time jump of 4 years after the end of the previous season. These chapters pose a somewhat different rhythm and tone from everything we had seen in ‘Shingeki no Kyojin so far, showing us the world beyond the walls and focusing on a new cast of characters that gives us a different point of view.
In addition to recovering characters like Reiner Braunalso introduces us to Gabi and Falco, two would-be warriors from Marley. It’s a season with lots of action and character developmentand that definitely ends up solving many doubts about the main conflict between Marley and Paradis.
Final Season – Part 2
These are the last twelve chapters of the series for now, and they have been focusing on Marley’s invasion of Paradis. This part of the plot has been loaded with revelations about the origin of the titans and the power of the Founding Titan.
During this part of the series, it is revealed Eren’s final plan so that the inhabitants of the walls can live safe from the rest of the world no matter how far they have to go to comply.
Available in Crunchyroll, where it has been broadcast in simulcast with Japan. For now these chapters are only available in Japanese with subtitles.
