The creator of ‘Gundam’ hates ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’: “The fact that these series are celebrated like this means that we live in a bad time”

There is no doubt that ‘Shingeki no Kyojin‘(‘Attack the titans‘) has become one of the most iconic series of the decade, with much of the credit going to the spectacular animation of Wit Studio and MAPPA.

Despite the legion of followers that it has, it never rains to everyone’s liking and the detractors could not be absent. It hurts more when it comes from an industry legend, but the creator of ‘Mobile Suit GundamYoshiyuki Tomino not a big fan of the work Hajime Isayama.

A work that I would never read

They are not new statements, but the comments that Tomino made in 2013 have gone viral in the midst of the “non-ending” from ‘Shingeki no Kyokin’with pretty harsh criticism of Isayama, his work, and the publishers who greenlit the manga.

“On the one hand, ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’ picks up the humor of its author very well […], it’s a very personal manga for the author, and it’s very difficult to read,” Tomino said. “He has said that because he was bullied in the past, he now uses his manga to let go of those feelings of resentment. But I have to say I’m glad he collects pictures of people with unflattering faces as a reference for drawing the Titans. In other words, the whole manga is NOT just about the author’s humor or feelings.”

Although the creator of ‘Gundam’ started out very soft, going so far as to praise Isayama for his perseverance in writing his manga, he soon began with much more critical comments. According to Tomino, ‘Shingeki no Kyokin’ is not lacking in offensive aspects for public order and morality that are much more extreme to him than if there were very graphic sexual scenes.

“It’s a work that I would never want to read or evaluate. And the fact that these animated series are being celebrated like this means that we are in a very bad moment,” Tomino continued.

To finish off, Tomino also criticized manga publishers and publishers.whom they accuse of accepting any idea regardless of its quality as long as it can be sold.

Attack the titans

According to J-CASt, Tomino also lamented not understanding the lack of sensitivity of the editors and said that “He would like to think that there is some intelligence and decency in society to compensate for public stupidity, but that intelligence rarely works like that and that there are no checks on people who treat ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’ as a relevant work”.

“He could be forgiven. But publishers need to understand the author’s wishes and find a different way to express them. I think publishing ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’ without any of these controls goes beyond very explicit sexual expression,” the creator said. from ‘Gundam’.
