The creator of ‘Gundam’ hates ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack the titans) is one of the anime series and one of the most successful manga in recent times. While the conclusion of its last season will go to 2023, many wonder the keys to its triumph among viewers and readers. And among them stands out the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tominowhich states that is not a big fan of Hajime Isayama’s work.

A work that he would never read and whose success he does not understand

Although Tomino’s statements are not new – they were taken into 2013 according to Espinof-, in the last few hours they have become especially viral, with excerpts appearing in different media and having resonance in social networks. Tomino’s statements are very harsh, go straight to the jugular, and show that he never finished liking Isayama’s work. In fact, he doesn’t understand how he got the green light from the editors and anime managers.

“On the one hand, Shingeki no Kyojin captures the humor of its author very well”Tomino comments. “But it is a very personal manga regarding the author, and it is very difficult to read. He has said that since he was a victim of bullying in the past, he now uses his sleeve to let go of those resentful feelings. But I have to say that I am glad that I collect pictures of people with unflattering faces as a reference for drawing the Titans. In other words, the whole manga is NOT just about the author’s humor or feelings,” says the creator of Gundam.

I don’t know, I’d like to think that there is some intelligence and decency in society to make up for public stupidity.

It is true that, although it highlights Isayama’s effort to write his manga, believes that the play’s sexual references and rate of violence are well above what he considers tolerable, and thinks that they disturb the public and moral order. “It is a work that would never want to read or evaluate. And the fact that these animated series are being celebrated like this means that we are in a very bad moment“, commented Tomino, who has criticized the editors and producers, whom he blames for not having enough sensitivity. “I don’t know, I would like to think that there is some intelligence and decency in society to make up for public stupidity, but that intelligence rarely works that way and that there are no checks on people trying Shingeki no Kyojin as a relevant work”, he espet.
