USA: Politician uses Attack on Titan to stoke hatred against migrants

Attack on Titan is considered one of the most popular animated series of all time. An American politician has now hijacked the story of Eren & Co. for an absurd hate campaign.

In the past, politicians have often used elements of various animated series and films to draw attention to themselves. This was generally not objectionable. Yesterday, however, a well-known politician in the United States decided to go beyond the limits of good taste. In a parody of Attack on Titan, he attacks not only his political opponents, but migrants as well.

Political opponents literally killed

Paul Gosar is a member of the Republican Party in the state of Arizona. On Monday, he posted on Twitter a strange parody of Attack on Titan, in which the faces of the characters and the Titans were swapped for real people. For example, current US President Joe Biden has been portrayed as a colossal titan. The face of controversial Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also been mounted on a Titan.

Gosar himself stages himself as Eren Jäger, who fights and kills the evil Titans. In the clip, real-life scenes also appear, accompanied musically by the first opening of Attack on Titan. For example, we see migrants heading to the United States. The United States Border Patrol officers are glorified as heroes in the video.

The absurd parody leaves little room for interpretation. Paul Gosar is known for his aggressive anti-migration policies. The Republican also has ties to far-right and extreme nationalist groups such as the Groypers, Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

Twitter describes the post as an “incitement to hatred” but has yet to delete it, saying the video may spark public interest. The clip has already been viewed over 3.3 million times.
