Annual music show of the Japanese television channel NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen will kick off on New Years Eve and feature a stacked lineup of artists performing popular songs. NHK released full track list for Thursday’s event. Some of these announced songs will include numbers, performers, and even characters tied to anime series like Demon Slayer, One Piece Film Rouge, and Spy x Family.
the Kohaku Uta Gassen (“ Battle of the Red and White Song“), also known as ” Kohakuis an annual New Year’s entertainment program produced by NHK. First broadcast in 1951 on radio, the show has been broadcast continuously, this year being the 73rd edition. Performers for Kohaku are invited by NHK among the most popular and successful singing groups in the Japanese music industry. During Kohaku, performers are divided into red (all-female, female-led acts) and white (all-male, male-led acts) teams, and “competition” while singing their respective songs. A panel of judges and audience input then decides which group got the best results. Despite declining ratings in recent years, Kohaku remains one of the most popular musical performances in Japan.
This year’s list of performers Kohaku Uta Gassen features several of the two teams singing songs related to anime series. The red team includes Aimer singing “Zankyo Sanka”, the theme song of demon slayer‘s Entertainment District arc, and Ryoko Shinohara singing a new version of “Itoshisa to Setsunasa to Kokoro Tsuyosa to”, a song long associated with the street fighter series. The Ado singer will also play the role of Uta from One Piece Movie: Redsinging “New Genesis”.
The White Team will feature Gen Hoshino singing “Kigeki”, the first ending theme of Spy x Family. The band Snow Man will perform “Brother Beat”, which was featured on the soundtrack of the live-action adaptation of Osomatsu-san. Finally, “Special Corner” performances not tied to specific teams will see Kiyoshi Hikawa perform “Genkai Toppa x Survivor,” from Dragon Ball Super.
Other artists with anime credits like Miletus and Official HIGE DANdism will be performing, but not specifically anime songs.
The 2022 Kohaku Uta Gassen aired on December 31, 2022 in Japan and internationally via NHK.
