Crunchyroll Reveals Categories for Anime of the Year Awards | Pretty Reel

The seventh annual Anime Awards will be hosted by Crunchyroll in the coming months, but the streaming company has already revealed the categories for the upcoming event. The nominees have not yet been announced. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite series after the nominated judges select the nominees.

Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards have been held since 2017. Several hit series have won Best Anime, including Yuri on Ice, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan Final Season: Part One. In 2018, Made in Abyss won, followed by Devilman Crybaby in 2019. The Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2023 Best Anime crown is ripe for the taking. The event will take place in Tokyo, for the first time.

This year, voting will be open from January 19 to January 25, with the actual awards being revealed and presented on March 4, 2023. The event will be hosted by Sally Amaki and Jon Kabira. Amaki is a renowned voice actress and Kabira is a popular host and entertainer. The judging panel is made up of 56 people from around the world, who are part of the broader anime fan industry, including journalists, critics, and comic book creators. Today, Crunchyroll revealed the many categories anime will be competing for.

In addition to Best Anime of the Year, the categories that will be decided by fans for the live event also include Best Animation, Best Anime Song, Best Character Design, Best Comedy, Best Series continues, Best Director, Best Fantasy, Best Film, Best Original Anime, Best Romance, and Best Score. The Presenter’s Choice Award winner will be selected by special guests at the Anime Awards, while the Special Achievement Award winner will be awarded by an industry panel selected by Crunchyroll. The Special Achievement award recognizes a person, studio or company – current or past – that has had a significant impact on the anime industry. This implies a legendary status within the medium.

Additional fan categories for the global livestream

Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for additional categories that will not be included during the live event. These include “Must Protect at All Costs” Character, Best Action, Best Drama, Best Ending Sequence, Best Main Character. Best New Series, Best Opening Sequence, Best Supporting Character, and Best Voice Actor Performance. The voice actor award will not be limited to Japanese actors only, as it will include those who have performed in many languages: Arabic, Castilian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. This highlights the global impact of anime and how far the medium has come since its beginnings.
