This year 2021 has turned out to be an excellent year for manga publishers. While Glénat has planned 250,000 copies for the launch of Tome 100 of One Piece, the Culture Pass introduced by the Government has for its part allowed many titles to see their sales explode, whether for Demon Slayer, The attack of the Titans or Spy x Family.
Manga prices will increase
Unfortunately, this beautiful euphoria has just collided with a sad reality. Since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic, the publishing world has found itself indirectly impacted by the crisis affecting the paper industry (paper, cardboard) which is facing a shortage of raw materials and an increase in production costs.
In fact, after having already been forced to postpone some releases in recent weeks due to a lack of paper to print manga, several publishing houses have just announced that the selling prices of certain titles will inevitably increase in the weeks to come so as not to be overwhelmed by the new prices of their suppliers.
Panini announces its new prices
As noted News, it is Panini Manga who struck the first by taking advantage of its Twitter account to unveil its new price list for 2022. After recalling the unprecedented situation it faces, “Following the generalized crisis in paper and cardboard and in general the soaring prices of other raw materials (such as ink), but also of transport, we are forced to modify the price of certain publications.“, the publisher revealed that most of its titles would undergo a increase of 30 cents.
“For series in 115×175 mm format (like Demon Slayer), the price will drop from € 6.99 to € 7.29 and for series in 130×180 mm format published this year (ALMA, Ookami Rise, Sidooh or Mars Red), the price will increase from € 7.99 to € 8.29“he explained. But that’s not all, an increase of € 1 is also to be expected for some particular formats, “For Happy! and all of Tsukasa Hôjô’s titles, the price will drop from € 9.99 to € 10.99. For the Perfect range (Banana Fish, Eden, 20th Century Boys + titles to come in 2022), the price will drop from € 16 to € 16.99.“
Publishing houses prepare for the future
An evolution that has logically made the public cringe some teeth, but which should quickly become the norm. And for good reason, on December 6, 2021, it is Pika Edition which in turn updated its prices. Results ? Expect 20 cents more for some titles like Happiness, Nine, Origin, Pumpkin Scissors, To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts and Yozakura Quartet, which will thus pass from € 7.75 to € 7.95.
Finally, as the ActuaLitté site specifies, if Delcourt has not yet officially communicated on this subject, the publisher should also go through the increase box. For now, the new prices have not been communicated, nor the licenses concerned (Delcourt / Tonkam publishes in particular Jojolion, Alice in Borderland, Fruits Basket), but it is rumored that the comics section could see the titles take 1 € to 2 € additional. It is therefore not stupid to expect an increase in the order of € 0.30 to € 0.50 for manga.
