After making a splash following its arrival in the catalog Netflix, the animation series Kimetsu no Yaiba aka Demon Slayer, produced by studios ufotable, continues to be talked about, especially since the launch of the second season from the Serie. But it seems that some fans of thejapanese anime seem rather bewildered by the translation of title of this season 2.
The English title of this second season is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba –Entertainment District Arc. A title that leaves more than one perplexed. Indeed, language and anime aficionados have pointed out that the Japanese word used for the bow is “Yuukaku” (Travel profile), et que this word has a much more specific meaning than “entertainment”.
Yuukaku can be translated as “red light district”, “district of pleasures” or even “brothel”. Yoshiwara is also a very famous place in Japan where there is a lot of prostitution., and this is also the setting in which this second season takes place, which leaves little doubt as to the meaning of the word. The term “Entertainment District”, on the other hand, rather suggests a type of artistic district, where one can find cinemas, theaters or other places of entertainment. It is therefore clearly different spaces, and words with different meanings.
As reported by our colleagues at Kotaku, the popular Japanese blog Hachima Kikou has recently referred to the English translation as “glaring error” and “not good”. This sparked a wave of backlash in the comments, with fans looking slightly surprised by the title.
the problem of translations
Internet users then offered their own suggestions for titles., among which we find “Nightlife District Arc” or even “Yoshiwara District Arc”. Others speculated that it would not be possible to correctly translate the title as “Red-light District Arc” due to the obvious sexual connotations. With us in France, the translation of the title seems quite relevant, the arch titled “The Pleasure District”. Some fan reactions on Twitter:
I don’t like how VIZ translates the sound effects in Kimetsu no Yaiba manga. It is very distracting. Also, some of the translations are weird (like “entertainment district” lol…)

Controversy is nothing new for this season’s title. When the title was revealed last February, some parents in japan did not like much. According to Livedoor News, some said they were uncomfortable with their kids watching an anime with that title, adding that they couldn’t explain to their kids what kind of place was the yuukaku. At the time, fans had defended the title, pointing out that these neighborhoods were real places, and that it was weird to claim otherwise.
