Inspired by a classic of Japanese literature

Its Japanese title is borrowed from a novel by the Japanese writer and journalist Genzaburo Yoshino, published in 1937 in the archipelago, and released in France under the title “And you, how will you live?”

This classic of Japanese literature, which follows the adventures of a young 15-year-old boy and whose author was known for his attachment to pacifism, just like Hayao Miyazaki, had already been the subject of a manga adaptation, published in 2017 in Japan.

Extremely little information about the film’s content has so far circulated. However, Hayao Miyazaki had indicated in an interview granted to the Japanese daily Asahi Shinbun that his film should show “how this book was essential in the life of the main character”.

“What I can tell you, from the little that I have seen of the film’s images, is that I am very struck by how much, even at that age, he retains a flamboyant imagination and richness. His creative energy remains as impressive as ever,” the filmmaker’s son, Goro Miyazaki, told Allociné a few months ago.

Hayao Miyazaki enjoyed worldwide success for his works such as “Spirited Away”, released in 2001, which won an Oscar for best animated film and the highest grossing Japanese box office for nearly two decades, before becoming to be dethroned at the end of 2020 by another Japanese animated film, “Demon Slayer”.

Studio Ghibli, which he co-founded with director Isao Takahata, who died in 2018, opened a vast park in Japan in early November dedicated to his universe.
