The Javits Center

New York Comic Con is happening on Manhattan Islandand more precisely at the Javits Center located at 429 11th Avenue (West Bank). To get there, nothing could be simpler. 34th Penn Station is less than 5 minutes walk and is regularly served by several metro lines. It is also possible to enjoy the city center for a morning walk, the convention only opening its doors to the public from 10:00 (or 10am).

Now let’s go back to this iconic place of North American pop culture in order to apprehend the architecture which turns out to be labyrinthine. Finding your way once you have passed through the entrance doors can quickly become tricky unless you have first read the map via the mobile application dedicated to the event. The NYCC extends this year over 5 floors, several showfloors and other conference rooms. Here is the distribution of “internships”, “rooms”… during the 2022 edition:

  • Level 1: role-playing games + board games / Main Stage / artists’ alley / autographs + photos
  • Level 2: Food Trucks / Food Court
  • Level 3: Showfloor (exhibitors)
  • Level 4: Panel Rooms
  • Level 5: Empire Stage

We got Anime power!

When I entered the Javits Center, I expected to see huge stands in the colors of Marvel and DC as well as Netflix, House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones – HBO) and finally The Rings of Power (Lord of the Rings – Amazon Prime Video). And yet… it is the Japanese culture and more particularly the japanimation which appears as the essential of this 2022 edition. Chainsaw Man, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, Naruto, My Hero Academia, etc. are now the stars of the convention. Many panels, among the most prestigious and especially full to bursting, are even dedicated to them.

These franchises are omnipresent both on the showfloor – they literally occupy half of the exhibitor space – and in the hearts of visitors. Crunchyroll has become one of the major players in pop culture in the United States, and it is felt physically during such an event. This highlights the rise of manga and anime in the North American market. Thousands of people are willing to wait, sometimes several hours, in the hope of seeing never-before-seen images of their favorite series, participating in a World Premiere and/or meeting the dubbing actors and actresses who lend their voices to the characters. The “animated” conquest of the West is definitely underway.

Conferences & previews

If for some visitors the New York Comic Con can be summed up as a series of compulsive purchases, for others the NYCC rhymes with “Panels & Screenings”. These conferences and screenings are an opportunity for the general public to see in the flesh renowned actors and actresses (Chloë Grace Moretz, James McAvoy, Norman Reedus) as well as internationally renowned artists (Todd McFarlane, Frank Miller ), and learn more about upcoming movies, series and anime. The lucky ones can especially enjoy a preview of some of the most anticipated audiovisual projects via a trailer, short exclusive excerpts, a first episode, and sometimes even a film in its entirety.

The 2022 edition was generous in this area. It all started on Thursday, October 6 with the presentation of the trailer for the movie Super Mario Bros. with Jack Black. He lends his voice to the character of Bowser. Projections of the first episode of Chainsaw Man and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War on the Empire Stage were also milestones shared by a crowd of cheering fans. Also worth mentioning are the Black Knight and the Man of Steel who made a splash on the Main Stage with the World Premiere of the new film directed by Warner Bros. Animation. A good thousand people were able to preview Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons. JV’s editorial staff attended the following panels and screenings:

  • Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons : preview
  • Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War : preview of episode 01
  • chain saw man : preview of episode 01
  • Crunchyroll Industry : presentation of the anime line up for the fall and winter seasons
  • The Peripheral : presentation of the Amazon Prime Video series with the actors (Chloë Grace Moretz, etc.) and broadcast of an exclusive excerpt
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Comic Book to Screen : return on the creation of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
  • The Walking Dead : teaser of the final season, meeting with the cast and presentation of the spin-offs of the franchise

The goodie fair

Still, Comic Con the perfect place to find THE rare pearl, and complete his collection of comic books, figurines, T-Shirts, and so on. Dozens of exhibitors thus present their works and/or their products over hundreds of square meters. If you’re the “broken basket” type, remember to have it repaired (or replaced) before entering the Javits Center or else you’ll spend your month’s salary before lunchtime. It must be said that some goodies are particularly attractive and have rarely equaled finishes. I am thinking in particular of a series of Marvel and DC figures ranging from 750 to 1200 US dollars and featuring Wolverine, Spider-Man, Superman, Storm and finally the god of thunder Thor.

The art of cosplay

Comic Con wouldn’t have the same flavor without the cosplayers who put their hearts into their work to embody their favorite fictional characters for a weekend. One thing is sure! The NYCC has nothing to envy the Japan Expo on this point, quite the contrary. Handmade creations here are equal to, or even surpass, those of professionals in the film industry. Superheroes, comics, manga, cinema, etc. all genres, all styles, all passions are expressed in the most beautiful way during this convention thought of as the ultimate pop-culture mass in North America.

The Game Con

Unfortunately, the 2022 edition of New York Comic Con does not shine with its video game content. Except demos Dragon Ball: The Breakers and One Piece Odyssey already approached during the Japan Expo and/or the Tokyo Game Show, the opportunities to discover the next titles intended for the video game market are not legion. However, we must mention the various tournaments organized throughout the New York show. Between MultiVersus, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Valorant and Guilty Gear: Strive, versus fighting fans can express their talents in the arena. Finally, an area centered on board and card games welcome insiders as well as the curious for a game of one of the many titles available. It is even possible to take introductory courses for some of them (Yu-Gi-Oh! for example).
