Available (in small quantities) since November 2020, the PS5 allows full backward compatibility with PS4 games. This means that all games from Sony’s old console are compatible with the PS5. So you can pop in your discs and play your favorite PS4 hits on your new machine.
On the other hand, some games have a next-gen update (free or paid) which allows access to more or less improvements on PS4 games that become optimized for the PS5. The addition of 4K, better framerate, compatibility with DualSense features, optimized loading times thanks to the PS5 SSD and more.
Since November 2020, around a hundred games have benefited from these next-gen updates. Generally, these are recent games that allow you to download a patch to activate the new improvements.
