Makoto Shinkai’s new movie, Suzume no Tojimariis revealed more in a new trailer as the film releases soon in Japan.
Alongside Mamoru Hosoda, Makoto Shinkai is probably the director of Japanese animated films who has burst onto the screen the most in recent years. While the latest Studio Ghibli film, Aya and the witchhas wallowed and that the legend Hayao Miyazaki has almost left his career behind him, it is now up to others to shape the medium that has made Japanese animation famous in cinema for decades.
Dark rooms are also increasingly victims of the growing success of Japanese franchise works with strong communities, such as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Demon Slayer: The Infinity Train or soon Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Enough to leave room, we hope, for works like Suzume no Tojimari, who will therefore sign Shinkai’s return to the cinema after his excellent The Children of Timein 2019. A new trailer has just dropped for our greatest pleasure.
If we can blame these new images for perhaps showing us too much, we can’t ignore our joy or our impatience to find once again an immense potential in Makoto Shinkai’s film. The director, well known for Your Nameagain offers here a sumptuous animation and an artistic direction, certainly very identifiable, but which never ceases to amaze. A graphic beauty that reflects both the lights and the colors of the meteorological phenomena specific to his films – the fascination of the sky and its power over men being the great challenge of his cinema.
Deja vu, some will say, since once again we will find a teenage love story, supernatural disasters and a soundtrack (already heady and superb) which evokes that of the latest films. However, Makoto Shinkai’s thematic obsessions have rarely led his feature films to repetition or vanity, but instead to always-provoking variation.
Since 5cm per second Where The Garden of Words, the filmmaker has always succeeded in renewing himself and has touched his subject very accurately. With Suzume no Tojimari, all the stars are aligned to let us dream of a new pearl in his filmography. The trailer hints at an even more fantastical storyline than anything he’s done so far, evoking a strange talking cat, magical doors, or a young man turned into a chair (why not, after all).
To discover how far this story will take us and whether or not Makoto Shinkai will succeed once again, it will however be necessary to be patient. The film will be released on November 11 in Japan.but does not yet have an official release date in France – nor a French title. We imagine that it will not be before 2023, Nevertheless ; we hope that with the growing success of Japanese animated films on our soil, the distribution will be very reactive to allow us to discover Suzume no Tojimari as quickly as possible.
