On August 16, Dragon Ball’s Goku will land on the world’s most famous video game island. A highly anticipated crossover, which underlines the ability of Epic Games’ battle royale to attract more and more special partnerships.
The Fortnite Twitter account has anticipated a news that has already been rumored for some time: on August 16, Goku from Dragon Ball will land on the most famous video game island in the world. A highly anticipated crossover, which underlines the ability of Epic Games’ battle royale to attract more and more special partnerships. The news was also picked up by well-known gaming dataminer Hypex, who has always tweeted the Dragon Ball-themed lobby on the map, reminiscent of Master Roshi’s Kame House.
While this may be valuable news for gamers, the arrival of Goku and co. on Fortnite once again raises a question: how strange is it to see the most famous Saiyan warrior fighting with guns instead of the famous Kamehameha? A discordant effect, already seen with Naruto and Superman, other characters with their characteristic techniques which, however, in Fortnite find themselves fighting in the same way with rifles, pistols, etc. In short, as Ash Parrish of The Verge points out, “nothing is sacred for Fortnite when there is money to be made”, at the cost of distorting the image and style of true pop icons. It takes a few days to see the general effect of this policy on Goku, but the examples cited above do not bode well.
Dragon Ball and Fortnite have been talking about it for over a year. Already in July 2021, several dataminers, that is, people who study the game’s code to find new features and upcoming updates, had identified an agreement between Epic Games and Shueisha, the Japanese publishing house owner of Shonen Jump, a shonen manga magazine that hosts Bleach, Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball, My Hero Academia, Naruto, One Piece and more. Some of their characters have actually landed in the battle royale, but who knows if others will be added to it and if above all they will obtain the favors of the fans after what they saw with Goku and Naruto.
