Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado’s lives were forever changed when Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, slaughtered their family and left Nezuko to become a demon. In Demon Slayer, it’s clear that Muzan’s goal is to become the strongest demon by overcoming his weakness to sunlight, one of a demon’s few weaknesses. What remains unclear to many fans, however, these are Muzan’s motives for turning Nezuko into a demon.

To anyone who meets her, it’s clear that Nezuko is no ordinary demon, but did Muzan have any way of knowing that she would be such a deviation when he made the decision to turn her? Did her attack have something to do with the Kamados’ ties to Yoriichi Tsukiguni, or was it pure coincidence that tragedy struck the Kamados and Nezuko became such a formidable opponent?

How did Nezuko become a demon?

Fans who have read the Demon Slayer manga may think that Nezuko’s transformation into a demon is the result of the Kamados bonding with Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi is the originator of the breath styles used by Demon Slayers and master of the Sun Breath Style. He almost killed Muzan with this technique, which led to the latter spending years tracking down anyone who had come into contact with the style to ensure it could never be used against him again.

The manga suggests to fans that there might be a family connection to Yoriichi, but it shows that he simply hung out with the Kamados’ ancestors during his travels. Although the Kamados have no Demon Slayers in their family, Tanjiro’s memories show that the Hinokami Kagura dance passed down from his father evolved from the basic principles of the Sun’s Breath style. However, Muzan may have tracked them down; it’s possible his fear of Yoriichi’s legacy drove him to kill the Kamadosbut that wouldn’t necessarily explain why Nezuko, or any Kamado, was turned into a demon.

Becoming a demon is no accident, and aside from Lady Tamayo, only Muzan has the power to create demons. Because every new demon born is a deliberate act on her part, what made Nezuko a prime candidate? So far the Demon Slayer anime hasn’t hinted at a reason, but the answer is finally revealed at the end of the Blacksmiths’ Village arc from the manga, and again in its final arc.

The fact that Nezuko is turned into a demon may seem random, since she is nothing more than a child from a poor family in the mountains. Although such a tragic circumstance may cause her to voluntarily accept the transformation, as shown by demons such as Rui, Daki, and Gyutarothe fact that she becomes a demon is a surprising coincidence. Muzan simply creates demons in the hope that one of them will be endowed with the power he seeks: immunity to the sun.

Some demons manage to survive and join the ranks of the Twelve Kizuki, but even the strongest of them haven’t developed the ability that would make Muzan all-powerful if he devoured them. There is no indication that Muzan could have known if Nezuko would survive, let alone if she would become the unique demon that she is.. In the end, Nezuko is nothing but a random victim in Muzan’s quest for power. Every demon he creates is essentially an experiment, and every successfully created demon that isn’t immune to the sun remains a failure of its overall purpose.

Nezuko’s transformation into a demon was technically planned, since she was another one of Muzan’s experiments, but the type of demon she would become surprised everyone. The same way Tanjiro continued to defy the odds on his demon slaying journey through willpower alone, Nezuko’s willpower fuels her growth as an extraordinary demon. Muzan’s decision to turn her into a demon for his own ends turns out to be one of his biggest mistakes.
