Your Name, a staple of Japanese animation
Poster of Your Name in France.
Released in August 2016 in Japan then in December of the same year in France, the film Your Name established itself as a must watch for all animated film lovers. It was directed by Makoto Shinkai, since considered the spiritual heir of Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited away, Princess Mononoke or The Howl’s Moving Castle). Anchored in a contemporary era to ours, the film depicts for an hour and a half the crossed destinies of two students: one lives in the countryside and dreams of going to Tokyo, while the other lives in the capital and wants to leave it. Although they don’t know each other, they wake up one morning in each other’s bodies. There follows a love story with magnificent drawings, highlighting landscapes that actually exist in Japan.
In short, the film is a global success but especially in Japan: Your Name is currently in the top 6 films that have generated the most revenue in the archipelagobehind for example Spirited away (2001) and Demon Slayer: The Infinity Train (2020).
What to want to multiply the cross-media around the work since a manga and a light-novel were published in stride. But that’s not all ! It is also a film, in live-action this time, which was announced in 2017. Paramount and JJ Abrams are associated for this adaptation, with the original producer Genki Kawamura as well as Eric Heisserer for the script.
Your Name Live-Action: Who is Marc Webb’s replacement?
A few months later, it was director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) who is chosen to be behind the camera during an announcement made by Genki Kawamura. A choice that delights Makoto Shinkai, behind the original work, since he is one of his favorite directors: he even slipped a nod to the director in his latest film (The Children of Time, released in 2019 in France). Ultimately, Variety tells us this week what it is Carlos Lopez Estrada (blindspotting, Summertime) who will replace Marc Webb.
While waiting for the adaptation of Your Name in live-action, many original animated films are to come in the coming months. There is, for example, Makoto Shinkai’s next film. He is intitulated Suzume no Tojimari and is expected next week in Japan.
