Detective Conan: Bride of Shibuya: Small, But Still Mighty

The new film of the Japanese phenomenon will be released in theaters this Wednesday, May 18. A new hyperactive adventure that you never get tired of.

His story has gone around the world. A young detective prodigy who turns into a child after having swallowed a poison: the plot has something to arouse our curiosity. Created 28 years ago by mangaka Gōshō Aoyama, the work has become cult. 100 volumes sold, 1000 episodes published, 25 animated films broadcast… Detective Conan is expanding its empire and accumulating records. All films released in Japan are automatically placed in the annual top 3 of the domestic box office. Eight of them are in the top 50 highest-grossing anime worldwide, a result higher than One Piece (present four times in the ranking) and dragonball (thrice). Less than a year after the release of The Scarlet Bulletthe detective returns to French cinemas for a new story at 100 per hour.

An accessible work that speaks to everyone

For this adventure, the franchise has relied on a new director: Susumu Mitsunaka (Haikyuu!!, Children of Time). In an official statement, he recounts his experience and admits that the beginnings of Detective Conan: Bride of Shibuya were hectic. “I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do. But moving forward on this project, I thought it would be nice if I could give a new dimension to Conan and the characters. And then, watching more recent films, I realized how these were no longer intended for children, but for adults. »

Despite its childishness, Detective Conan is not reserved for the youngest. The other generations get caught up in the game and willingly follow the hero’s investigation by trying to solve it before him. The work wishes to touch everyone, regardless of age or knowledge of the detective. From the first minutes, the film takes the time to explain the relationships between the characters and their place in the universe of Gōshō Aoyama. This sequence breaks the fourth wall to give beginners the keys to understanding the rest of the story, and to provide fans with references that make them smile.

From this short explanatory sequence to the credits, we can’t help but get attached to the characters. They are unique and all bring a little something to the work: humor, reflection, emotion… “What makes the charm of this film is that each character gives their all in everything they do based on their own feelings”, adds the director. We find familiar faces, which are also present in the animated series, but also lesser known ones, like Rei Furuya (one of the members of the secret police infiltrated in the Men in Black).

Deadly attacks, a secret society and a mysterious serial killer

The story takes place in Tokyo, in the Shibuya district which is preparing to celebrate Halloween. With such an event, we expected a dark and disturbing atmosphere, but Detective Conan preferred subtlety. Exit the shivers, only a few costumes remind us of the Day of the Dead. But the absence of ghosts and horrific codes does not detract from the plot, which is very well put together. It all starts during the preparations for an ultra-guarded wedding. During the ceremony, attacks follow one another: an assailant bursts into the room, a criminal gets out of prison, Detective Furuya gets trapped and finds himself with a bomb around his neck… A happy mess that Conan will have to solve. With the help of his IQ and his friends, he will try to unmask and arrest Plamya, a mysterious bomber.

The electric atmosphere of Shibuya propels us directly into the history and the heart of the city. The whole neighborhood has been recreated through digital images and the viewer is caught up in its atmosphere and bustle. The shots are thoughtful and meticulous, and the bright colors only enhance the animation. Visually, everything is very beautiful and it only immerses us a little more in the film. The plot is punctuated by funny scenes, love stories and a complex investigation. She questions us and pushes us to find the key. The bomber leaves us some clues but always seems to be one step ahead of Conan and his colleagues. The 110 minutes unfold without length and are marked by unexpected twists.

The film manages to maintain the suspense until the end, but the revelation is nevertheless disappointing. Plamya’s motivations and past remain unclear and the work deserved a more complex “big bad guy”. Despite these few inconsistencies, Detective Conan: Bride of Shibuya is still great entertainment. It allows beginners to discover this astonishing universe, and the most faithful to savor a new investigation of this little hero who has become a cult.
