Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuta’s new manga to be released at the same time as the prequel movie

As reported by Weekly Shonen Jump News – Unofficial, series creator Gege Akutami has written a new independent story that centers on Yuta Okkotsu, the sword-wielding curse user who is also the protagonist of the manga and of Jujutsu Kaisen’s prequel film 0. The new chapter will be published in the Weekly Shonen Jump and will also be included in a special booklet distributed to Japanese viewers who will see the new prequel film. The booklet will also include commentary from Akutami and the film crew.

Yuta is the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a manga created by Akutami and originally published under the title “Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School”. Set before Yuji Itadori was introduced to the world of curses and wizards, the story centers on Yuta, a young man who is haunted by the spirit of his childhood sweetheart, Rika. This short miniseries was released roughly a year before the main manga series Jujutsu Kaisen debuted, and featured numerous characters, such as Satoru Gojo and the villainous Suguru Geto, who would also appear in subsequent series of Akutami. Following JJK’s success, the prequel story was retroactively renamed to reflect its position in the series’ timeline.

The film adaptation of the prequel will be released in Japan on December 24. The film will be directed by Sunghoo Park, who directed the first season of the animated adaptation of the series. Park recently revealed that he originally wanted to start the animated series with Yuta’s origins, but ultimately decided that it would be best to start with Yuji’s story. Details regarding the film’s international release have yet to be announced.

Jujutsu Kaisen is the latest hit series from Weekly Shonen Jump. The series was launched in 2018 and recently announced that it will have 60 million copies in circulation by the end of the year, already surpassing the sales figures of older series like Inuyasha, Haikyuu !! and My Hero Academia. Despite a two-month hiatus during the summer, the series was also the best-selling manga series of the year in Japan, with more than 30 million units sold in the region. The Creation of Akutami is set to become the 19th manga series to surpass a circulation of 100 million copies, joining the ranks of other Shonen Jump hits such as One Piece, Dragon Ball and Naruto.
