1 – The evolution of the characters

The two OAVs of season 5 contrast sharply with the previous ones. They fit into the structure of the story by presenting the students of U.A. in their evolution. We see Izuku Midoriya, Shoto Todoroki, Katsuki Bakugo and their comrades getting stronger and developing their Quirks. We are a long way from the hesitant and fearful beginnings of our heroes.

2- The emphasis is on the funny

The main attraction of the two OAVs is its bias towards comedy. Whether it’s the first or the second OAV, we have a lot of jokes and funny situations without falling into caricature. For example, the Izuku, Bakugo and Shoto trio faces a villain who has a comedy Quirk like Mrs. Joke, or even the two Yuei teams who have found their own version of baseball with Gang Orca and Shishido as leaders. Both pro-heroes are known for exuberant reactions. Everything is done to relax the spectators and prepare them for the storm of season 6.

3- Baseball: a recurring sport in anime

Baseball is very often used in anime to express the cohesion of a group. We have as an example episode 70 of Dragon Ball Super which opposed the teams of Beerus and Champa. Jujutsu Kaisen also used the baseball theme, pitting exorcism high schools in Tokyo and Kyoto against each other, granting them the ability to use their occult power. It is in this same logic that fits HLB hear Hero League Baseball. In addition to the rules of baseball, is added the possibility of using his Quirk to outsmart his opponent. Who do you think will win?

4- The heroes ready to save the world from the villains

My Hero Academia may be full of comedic references, but it’s still a heroes vs. villains anime. This is where the second OAV, “Laugh! As If You Are in Hell”. A villain by the name of Mr. Smiley reproduces drawings on walls without permission. Unfortunately, he often manages to escape thanks to his Quirk which makes those who try to stop him burst into laughter. But his smile will quickly fade, when the Endeavor internship team will get in his way.

5- A touch of sentimentality

My Hero Academia is action, comedy, but also emotion galore! Get your tissues ready!! “Laughter! As If You Are in Hell” will also introduce you to the sad story of Mr. Smiley. How did someone with the power to make people happy end up being a villain? On top of that, this episode was proof that All Might was right in entrusting the One for All to Midoriya.
