After having gathered more than 700,000 spectators in theaters last spring, Demon Slayer is back on… almost all platforms. Here is the program for the fall season!
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (saison 2)
Now that Funimation (Wakanim’s parent company) and Crunchyroll are no longer a single entity, they will be able to share licenses. It is therefore Demon Slayer which opens the ball, since the first season is available in VF and VOSTF, but also obviously the new one! This begins first with a TV reassembly over 7 episodes of the feature film. The Infinity Train, released in May at the cinema (with an unpublished episode devoted to Rengoku at the opening). A clever marketing choice, which in particular allows in France to bypass the chronology of the media. Otherwise, it would have been necessary to wait until 2024 for the film to be released online!
The new unpublished arc of the Pleasure district, covering Volumes 9-11 of the manga, will debut on December 5. After Rengoku, our heroes Tanjurô and Inosuke will team up with Tengen Uzui, the Pillar of Sound, to hunt down a new demon in a neighborhood of courtesans… 18 episodes are planned in all.
Another eagerly awaited title for this fall: Platinum End, the adaptation of the latest manga from the authors of Death Note and Bakuman, Tsugumi Ôba and Takeshi Obata. Mirai Kakeshashi, a young student, is saved in extremis from a suicide attempt by Nasse, an angel. The latter then offers him powers that will allow him to face 12 other candidates applying for the rank of God … The series is signed by the young Signal.MD studio, to which we owe recently Mars Red or the film by Keiichi Hara, Wonderland, and should last 24 episodes.
Blade Runner : Black Lotus
After Ghost in the Shell : SAC 2045 for Netflix, Sola Digital Arts tackles another cyberpunk classic: Blade Runner. This is not the first time, however, since the studio had produced the computer graphics for the excellent short film. Blade Runner : Black Out 2022 by Shinichirô Watanabe. The story takes place in 2032 and will be centered around Elle, a replicant. Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki take care of the realization and like Fena : Pirate Princess this past August, this 13-episode series will air simultaneously on Adult Swim from November 13.
Muv-Luv Alternative is the third series taking place in the same universe, after the excellent, but unpublished Muv-Luv Alternative : Total Eclipse in 2012, et Black marks in 2016 at Liden Films. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, just know that Hajime Isayama was inspired by it to The attack of the Titans (basically, humanity is attacked by monsters and they will defend themselves with mechs). Although it is basically a video game, or more precisely visual novel, Muv-Luv Alternative was adapted into a series of novels and manga (17 volumes anyway). The series is produced by Flagship Line Studios, Graphinica (Valkyrie Apocalypse) and Yumeta Company (Digimon Adventure : Last Evolution Kizuna). 12 episodes are planned.
Pick up. Destiny
The MAPPA series of the season, with Madhouse as a back-up. Pick up. Destiny is an original project initiated by Bandai Namco Arts and created by the author of Sakura Wars, Ôji Hiroi (a mobile game is released at the same time). It is about a warrior, a Musicart, who draws her power from music. With her conductor, she fights creatures that have invaded the Earth… It is surely not a series that we will look at for the depth of its scenario. On the other hand, difficult to be choosy in front of the impressive action sequences of the first episodes.
The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat
Like every season, we have the right to our share of isekai anime. We must therefore sort it out and our choice is l’adaptation du light novel de Rui Tsukiyo (the hilarious nanar Redo of Healer). Here, it is not a bad-tempered high school student who reincarnates in a new world, but a hitman dubbed by his former bosses when he retires. A cousin of John Wick, in short. A goddess gives him a second chance if he accepts to assassinate the famous hero of the fantasy world where he will be reborn. It is produced by the studio Silver Link (Bofuri) for 12 episodes.
Among the other titles to see this season: Sakugan (mecha by Satelight and the Frenchy Stanislas Brunet), The Faraway Paladin (another promising isekai) and of course the second part of 86 Eighty-Six.
Anime Digital Network (ADN)
As in every season now, ADN shares licenses with Crunchyroll. So you can see on the platform Platinum End, The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, Digimon Ghost Game and season 3 of World Trigger. But also excellent older titles:
Terror in Resonance
Broadcast in 2014 on Wakanim, this 11-episode series, produced by Shinichirô Watanabe for the MAPPA studio, has since been only available on DVD and Blu-ray (at All the Anime) despite a short visit to Netflix in 2016. DNA therefore offers us again this thriller where teenagers carry out attacks within the Japanese captain. It will be available from October 26.
Ping Pong : The Animation
Recently released on Blu-ray at All the Anime, the adaptation of the manga Ping Pong by Masaaki Yuasa has also been absent from all platforms since 2018. So take out your rackets, the 11 episodes are again available on DNA.
If Wakanim lent Demon Slayer, they recover on their side Platinum End (definitely available everywhere) and above all Jujutsu Kaisen ! If you haven’t had the chance to see the excellent adaptation of the manga Gege Akutami, go for it!
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, partie 2
Mushoku Tensei begins its second part of the season after a very encouraging first (solid fantasy universe, achievement worthy of a feature film), but however marred by the perverse side of the young hero. After being teleported to the other side of the world, Rudeus and Eris begin their quest to return home with the help of Ruijerd, alias “Dead End”… 12 episodes are planned for this second short.
Ranking of Kings
The new series from Wit Studio looks promising. The studio behind Great Pretender and Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- abandons the original productions for a while to adapt a manga narrating the adventures of Boji, a young and frail prince. Despite his deafness, he intends to become the greatest king the kingdom has ever known. The series (23 episodes) will be available in simulcast in its original version, but also with a French dubbing (with the legendary Brigitte Lecordier!). Note that the manga will be released next year in France by Ki-oon.
The Heike Story
Director Naoko Yamada (Silent Voice) leaves Kyoto Animation for a while for Science Saru, the studio created by Maasaki Yuasa. The story is set at the end of the 12th century in Japan and is inspired by a historical tale telling the struggle between two clans for control of the country.
Available for France at Ototo since last year, Tomoki Izumi’s manga is entitled to its animated adaptation. This is the Passionne studio (Interspecies Reviewers) who deals with this horrific story where a young high school student, Miko Yotsuya, one day discovers that she can see ghosts. Instead of coming into contact with them or running away from them, she decides to simply ignore them. A funny concept, but it is hard to imagine the whole series holding only on this pitch. The proof from the second episode, it is already starting to go round in circles …
AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline
The Mecha Sunrise series of the season (via its Beyond branch which was behind Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE), with the director of Fafner and Broken Blade behind. The studio recycles Gundam and Code Geass at the same time, since the story takes place in 2061 in a Japan occupied by foreign nations. The hero is a young robot pilot (the AMAIM of the title) and will join the resistance to reconquer the country… Good big entertainment with oppressed Japanese and nasty sadistic foreigners. To be taken at the 10th degree, even if we are happy to see a 2D mech series.
Already available for a while in the USA, Demon Slayer is also coming to Netflix from 1is next november. But beware, this will only be the first season.
The big exclusive of the season on Netflix is the adaptation of the multi-award-winning manga by Yamaguchi Tsubasa (available from Pika). The story centers on Yatora Yaguchi, a popular high school student who discovers a passion for art and especially painting. He then decides to apply for the prestigious major arts university in Tokyo, the Geidai. The series is produced by the Seven Arcs studio (Art) and supervised by Koji Masunari (Read or Die, Magi). However, the enthusiasm has subsided after the first two episodes, which do absolutely not do justice to the superb plates of the manga. The good news is that Netflix offers simulcast anime. A first since Violet Evergarden in 2018.
In addition to this series, you can find Tatsu, the “yakuza at home”, in the second part of The Way of the Apron (5 new episodes), the new season of Baki which takes place in a high security prison (12 episodes) and the second feature film of the franchise The Seven Deadly Sins, entitled Cursed by Light.
Star Wars : Visions
Disney + is now also launching into Japanese animation, since from next year, we will be able to discover four exclusive series on the platform. In the meantime, it’s the franchise Star Wars which finds itself in the hands of cadors like Hiroyuki Imaishi (Promar) et Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell : SAC). Unfortunately, this anthology of short films disappoints by its lack of audacity and the weakness of the scripts (apart from the excellent first short in black & white).
