It can be easy to miss major plot points in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, as there are a ton of stories and narratives going on all at once. One in particular that takes a backseat is Yuta’s origins, and how exactly he is able to pull off the feats he does at the film’s conclusion. Granted, the story tries to answer this with a quick exposition of Gojo, but you wouldn’t be blamed for walking away from this moment and asking yourself: How are Yuta and Gojo related in Jujutsu Kaisen 0?And how do his powers work?
As Gojo explains near the end of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Yuta is distantly related to his family of Jujutsu sorcerers and thus shares their affinity for using rare curses to his advantage. This is because they are both related to Sugawara Michizane, one of the founding members of the three great Jujutsu sorcerer families and one of the three greatest vengeful spirits among curses.
Little is currently known about Sugawara, but it can be inferred that his affinity for curses and his resulting battles with manifested curses and curse users resulted in him becoming a vengeful spirit.
Similarly, being a member of Yuta’s family tree explains why the young man had latent curse powers on par with Gojo’s. This is how he was able to turn Rika into such a powerful curse without even meaning to, and why he displayed so many other abilities during his fight with Suguru Geto.
What does Kiyota Ichiji tell Gojo about Yuta?
This in turn explains what Kiyota Ichiji told Gojo earlier in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. As Gojo instructed Yuta and helped make sure he learned to control his curse powers, Ichiji investigated whether it was Rika who cursed Yuta or Yuta. who cursed Rika.
To that end, he researched their family backgrounds and found that Yuta’s was much less clear than Rika’s. This prompted him to investigate further and he eventually revealed to Gojo that Yuta was his distant relative.
It’s a minor point in the grand scheme of the movie, but it’s also very important in how Yuta learns who he is. Similarly, it lays the groundwork for later arcs in which larger vengeful spirits appear or are mentioned in more detail, with Gojo and Yuta playing larger roles in the story as a result.
