Jujutsu Kaisen 0: what is the long-awaited animated film worth? Critical

One of the most popular manga of the moment is coming to the big screen. After breaking all sales records in 2021, and waiting for the anime’s second season, Jujutsu Kaisen offers itself an animated film, which is released in dark rooms this Wednesday, March 16, 2022. But the previews are held this Sunday for the luckiest of you. Definitely, 2022 is a great year for anime and manga lovers. Did this adaptation of volume 0 of the manga satisfy us? We tell you everything in our review of Jujutsu Kaisen 0warranty without spoilers

Summons to Tokyo Exorcism School

Pre-published since 2018 in the iconic Weekly Shōnen Jump, Jujutsu Kaisen is among the best manga of the new generation. Gege Akutami’s work is even the best-selling manga in 2021, with more than 60 million copies sold around the world last December. In France, it took until February 2020 to see the first two volumes released. Today, eighteen volumes have been released in Japan while here, only thirteen volumes are to be discovered. The fourteenth will be released next month, April 7, 2022.

The success of the manga is reinforced by an impeccable anime adaptation by MAPPA, currently at the helm of the last season of The attack of the Titans. Airing from October 2020 to March 2021, the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, composed of 24 episodes, succeeds in seducing fans and the press. While the next season was freshly announced last month, fans will have to wait until 2023 to discover the rest of the adventures of Yuji, Megumi and Nobora.

But with the release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, fans of Gege Akutami’s work have something to eat. The anime film adapts volume 0 of the manga. In this prequel, no Yuji Itadori or Ryomen Sukuna, two central characters of the main plot. We take a small step back and focus on the story of Yuta Okkotsu, a “cursed” teenager. Indeed, the latter is possessed by the spirit of his deceased childhood friend, following an “unfortunate” promise. And she attacks anyone who attacks the young man.

Stuck in this curse, Yuta suffers. But the powerful and eccentric Satoru Gojo arrives to his rescue and takes him under his wing. The teenager will thus integrate the school of exorcism in Tokyo to learn to master his scourge.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: an adaptation to the height

For those who have read volume 0 of Jujutsu Kaisen, they will be delighted since the animated film is really faithful to the manga. Some additions have crept into Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and they were really welcome. Indeed, these additions reinforce the scenario. We note in particular flashbacks which allow us to dig just a little more into the past of certain characters. This gives volume to the plot and a stronger emotional dimension to the story.. So, in my eyes, Yuta and Rika’s (his faithful childhood friend/bane) relationship is even more touching in the movie than in the manga.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0, it is also an opportunity to highlight characters who are relegated to the background in the main plot of the anime. Yes, Yuta’s new classmates are none other than Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki and Panda! Now highlighted, these three apprentice exorcists are really interesting to discover in another light. What reinforce their popularity with the fans.

The manga’s main antagonist, Suguru Geto, also responds. What to learn a little more about him, since he is quite discreet in the first season of the anime.

Despite an accurate adaptation of the manga, readers will still be surprised throughout the film. I promise, no spoilers, I won’t say more about it…

Animation work on Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is really flawless and the fights amaze us. They take in intensity and fluidity compared to the manga. What keep fans in suspense during the 105 minutes of the film. The pace is actually quite frantic, with no real downtime. At the same time, there is matter. As for the soundtrack of the film, it is relevant to reinforce the whole without being omnipresent.

In the original version subtitled in French, the voice actors are exquisite. In particular Megumi Ogata who lends her voice to the main character, Yuta Okkotsu. The seiyū is best known for dubbing the character of Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: top or flop?

Without either positioning itself as the animation film of the year, Jujutsu Kaison 0 is an excellent feature film that should especially delight fans of the universe created by Gege Akutami. Especially people who are content with the anime and can’t wait for the second season… Since it’s a prequel, neophytes will appreciate the animated film even if they don’t have not seen or read Jujutsu Kaisen. The bases are very quickly laid, without going into detail. In short, everyone will find their account.

Like any good self-respecting shōnen, the power of friendship is still at the heart of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and it is not to displease us. Between plot, animation and music, the balance is perfect. Sprinkle all that with a bit of fan service and you’re good to go. Ah, and wait for the end of the credits before leaving the cinema…
