It’s no secret. Geto Suguru and Gojo Satoru were best friends. Even when Geto went after Gojo students in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, his friend had a hard time abandoning him despite several opportunities to kill him. It’s a rather special conversion, between Gojo and Yuta, which led some fans to believe that the bond between Gojo and Geto would be more than friendship. But it’s another theory that has been talked about lately among fans of Jujutsu Kaisenwhose third season is expected in 2023.

Since the start of the manga’s main story, Geto has always been known to be possessed by Kenjaku, a millennial exorcist. But some of the character’s actions suggest that Geto could live alongside his host in his own body. Presumably, Gojo would be the key to the whole story and might even be the one to save Geto from possession. So, is Geto still alive? Or does Kenjaku know how to play the game particularly well?

Kenjaku possessed Geto’s body after his loss to Gojo

If you have seen the movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0 or you’ve read the tome, you most certainly remember that heartbreaking scene where Gojo kills his old friend Geto after he attacks Tokyo’s exorcism school. But there is one detail that you may not have noticed: Gojo does not take the corpse with him. This detail suggests that he left the body where it was without any supervision. So it was easy for anyone to pick it up and use it to become Kenjaku’s new receptacle.

It was after his loss to Gojo that Geto was possessed by Kenjaku.

Especially when you know the powers of the latter. Indeed, as an exorcist, Kenjaku is not without talent. And his cursed technique is simply to transferring one’s brain into another person’s body in order to possess them. This is also how he was able to easily take the place of many people, including Noritoshi Kamo, an exorcist from the Meiji period whose research led to the creation of Nine Stages Fetus. Kamo is notably considered the biggest shame of the three clans and it would not be surprising if Kenjaku, since that time, has been in hiding waiting for a new opportunity.

Gojo provoked Geto and it was his body that responded

There’s one thing Kenjaku hadn’t thought of: the reaction of Geto’s body in the presence of Gojo. In chapter 91 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Kenjaku sets a trap for Gojo and manages to imprison him. But while Gojo is ambushed, he directly addresses Geto telling him that it’s time for him to wake up. He even asks him until when Geto intends to let himself be manipulated. These two injunctions then provoke a reaction in Geto’s body. which leads to a strangulation attempt by the right arm.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Although surprised, Kenjaku is amused by the situation. It is indeed the first time that he has been the victim of such a reaction from a host. In the past, his partner Mahito had speculated that the soul came before the body and that even when possessed, some part of the original host remained present. Nonetheless, Kenjaku explains that body and soul are ultimately the same thing and exist in each other no matter the situation. So it’s not really surprising that Geto can react to his best friend’s words.

How can Geto get away with it in the sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen?

Within the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, Geto is a unique exorcist, especially because of his cursed technique which works by consuming black energy. The more it absorbs, the more power it gains. It is therefore quite possible that he could use the same operation against Kenjaku in order to at least maintain his power. If this turns out to be true, Geto may have managed to survive by feeding on dark energy from Kenjaku..

This could also explain Kenjaku’s surprise when Geto reacted to Gojo’s words, but also why this event is totally unique. And if this theory is true, it is therefore not impossible that Geto is able to come back to life by regaining the upper hand over Kenjaku. This functioning would be quite similar to that which exists between Yuji and Sukuna. Although he is the king of plagues, Yuji has the ability to silence him, as Sukuna hasn’t recovered all of his power yet. Along the same lines, Kenjaku might not be as powerful as he makes out. A lack of power which gives Geto the opportunity to move his arm.

Moreover, if Kenjaku has, like Sukuna in Yuji, deployed an extension of territory in Geto, it is not excluded that the two fight for the possession of the body. And taking into account Geto’s strength and technique, the latter could well surprise us and succeed in taking over the Kenjaku, even exorcising him from his own body. What do you think ?
