Jujutsu Kaisen Director Explains Why The First Film Was Risky

Jujutsu Kaisen fans were surprised when it was revealed that after the anime’s first season the franchise would be releasing a new movie, and one of the executives behind it all explained how risky it was. for the anime studio. The franchise’s first feature film picked up the original Gege Akutami prequel series and hit theaters across Japan less than a year after the first season wrapped. It was another surprising decision that had fans wondering what to expect, and those behind the film were initially worried about a movie being released without many characters from the anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie introduced fans to a new main character, and while there were characters from the main series, there was initial hesitation to follow the successful anime with such a major detour. But as Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka explained, while there is some risk involved in releasing a new movie without most of the threads from the 20+ episode first season, the The studio team was convinced that the prequel had enough of a standalone story to succeed regardless.

Talk with Anime News Network on the risk of following Jujutsu Kaisen’comes alive with a new movie focused on the prequel, Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka explained, “…maybe there was a risk. Because if you look at it from the perspective of them finishing two courses of the show and then continuing in a movie that doesn’t have the characters that people know, maybe there was a risk.” But then explained that the prequel story had a strong enough story to go through, “But when we saw story 0, it was such a powerful story on its own. We were pretty confident that the fans would enjoy it for themselves. ”
