It is on March 27, 2021 that episode 24 of season 1 of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen, adapted from the work of Gege Akutami, was broadcast on MBS (Japan) and Crunchyroll / Wakanim (France). And since ? No more news. While the adaptation stopped at chapter 63 of the manga out of the 172 already published (story still in progress), no season 2 has yet been formalized by the producers.
The future of Jujutsu Kaisen still unclear, but…
What to understand that the series should therefore never have the right to a sequel on our screens? We reassure you, it is fortunately unlikely. If no decision seems to have been taken yet today, Yōichi Mushiaki – president of MBS, nevertheless hinted that the situation should evolve positively in the days / weeks to come.
“For now, I would like you all to be patient until we come up with a concrete plan.“, he first revealed during a press conference. Then, he added afterwards, “But I think we should manage to put in place a development that should live up to your expectations.“. In other words, the anime is still alive behind the scenes, it will just take a lot of patience before we can experience this season 2 on our screens.
Will the movie save the anime?
Disappointment ? Yes, but this one is ultimately unsurprising. On December 24 in Japan, the MAPPA studio unveiled at the cinema Jujutsu Kaisen 0, an animated film adapted from the eponymous manga serving as a prequel to this universe. A project that logically took him a long time to create (which explains the state of the series), but which was also designed to allow Gege Akutami to regain a little head start with his manga vis-à-vis from anime. As we remember, he has been regularly forced to take breaks in recent months, which has delayed the development of his story. This film project was therefore a blessing in disguise.
The positive point is that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 could even indirectly allow Jujutsu Kaisen to offer a bright future on television with a potential season 3 already validated. The reason ? In just a few weeks, this film – which was not initially a priority, has already become the 64th highest box office hit in history Japanese with over 6,200,000 entries for nearly $75 million in revenue ! What prove to MBS that the public is present for the license.
