Yuji Itadori’s fate was sealed from the start of Jujutsu Kaisen. But he is not the only character in the series.
From the beginning of the series of Jujutsu Kaisenone of the most watched anime in 2021, the fate of Yuji Itadori has been sealed: the young man is indeed destined to die one way or another. Indeed, after he swallowed one of Sukuna’s fingers, it was decided that Yuji would become the Plague King’s vessel until he swallowed all twenty fingers. Once Itadori swallows all of Sukuna’s fingers, he is expected to be simply executed in order to free the world from the threat Sukuna poses.
Although it is well known that Yuji is destined to die, many fans believe that the young man will not be the one who dies at the end of the series. According to some theories, it would rather be the young Megumi Fushiguro who should lose his life at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen. And, surprisingly, some details would actually point in that direction. We take stock!
The surprising relationship between Yuji and Megumi
It almost happened in the first episodes of the series. Sukuna had completely taken control of Yuji’s body and had competed against Megumi who, unsurprisingly, had lost. During this fight, Sukuna had shown particular interest in Megumi and her fighting style., surprised that a summoner is able to fight in melee, but also by its immense potential. So it’s a safe bet that once he regains all of his powers, Sukuna will once again seek to measure himself against Megumi. If you remember correctly, in the arc Birth of the Matrix, Sukuna has already had the opportunity to kill Megumi. What he refused to do, thus wishing that the young man realizes his strength in order to have a fight worthy of the name.
But it’s not just that. The friendship that binds Yuji and Megumi and its functioning play a very large part in feed theories around a final confrontation between Megumi and Sukuna. Since the first episode of the series, each regularly saves the life of the other, so it would not be surprising if Megumi seeks to save her friend. Moreover, if we think about it, each has become the engine of the other, so we can reasonably think that the last fight will not be two, but three: Sukuna, Megumi and Yuji.
Megumi feels responsible for Yuji’s situation.
In episode 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi is tricked into saving Yuji from a flail attack. This is also what prompted Yuji to swallow Sukuna’s first finger, in order to save Megumi in turn. This decision was decisive for the series sinceit led to the decision to execute Yuji. Execution which aims to save Yuji from a lot of suffering, but also to prevent Sukuna’s return, let’s remember.
Although Megumi claimed to have saved Yuji for selfish and personal reasons, it was mostly that subconsciously, he refused to see a good person die despite the danger they may represent. As soon as we understand that, we can easily say that Megumi feels responsible for the situation in which Yuji now finds himself.
Megumi is determined not to let Yuji die.
In Megumi’s eyes, he feels he saved Yuji for totally selfish reasons. Yet, in hindsight, we know that is not the case. But believing he saved Yuji for selfish reasons is not without consequences.. Indeed, this has a rather painful impact for Yuji, since his coming into the world of exorcism is linked to the decision to save him from Megumi. And the more Yuji suffers from the events, the more Megumi’s feelings become more complex and haunt him.
Despite all this, Megumi doesn’t regret saving Yuji and the last thing he wants is to see his friend die. That’s why he will do absolutely anything to protect Yuji and prevent him from doing rash things like swallowing another Sukuna finger.. Especially knowing that Megumi has already witnessed Yuji’s first death, we can legitimately only one experience of this kind is enough for him.
Currently, we see that Megumi’s goal is to surpass Yuji’s power, this in order to be able to defeat Sukuna and thus free Yuji. Megumi is ready to do anything to save her friend, so it’s totally that ultimate fight of Jujutsu Kaisen includes Megumi. However, it remains to be seen how the young exorcist would go about achieving his goal. Would he sign a contract with Sukuna in order to exchange his life for that of Yuji? Anyway, at the moment we can only wait to see how things turn out, but also wait for new information regarding season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen scheduled for 2023.
