Yuji Itadori’s ending may have already been revealed at the very beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, but killing him might just be the perfect ending to his story.
Death has always loomed over Yuji Itadori even before he joined Jujutsu High, and – despite being the main character in the story – killing him could create the perfect ending for Jujutsu Kaisen. The possibility of Yuji’s disappearance has been a big point of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime since its debut, but after overcoming so many defeats and serious threats, it might seem unlikely that the show will end with Itadori finally dying for good. . However, creator Gege Akumtami was never shy about taking risks and subverting expectations, so killing off the main character is never out of the question.
Jujutsu Kaisen ends its first episode with a premise that defines the rest of the story. In the real world, there is a world of cursed spirits, and after eating one of the fingers of a cursed spirit Sukuna, Itadori wakes up in an execution cell. Here, the strongest Jujutsu wizard, Gojo Saturo – who is also a teacher at Jujustu High – tells him that he has been sentenced to death. Unable to avoid this, but he is offered the option of postponing his execution by finding and consuming all of Sukuna’s fingers, after which he will be exorcised to destroy the curse. Itadori decides to pursue this impending execution to try to help others, though it is this exact motivation that suggests Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending may see him killed permanently.
A common struggle Itadori has throughout the series is his desire and will to not only save people, but to choose when and how he dies. This is first hinted at when his only parental figure, his grandfather, dies of cancer. Unable to do anything about it and with hardly anyone around him in his final moments, the death of Itadori’s grandfather takes a big toll on him. So, faced with a similar certain death beyond his control, Itadori struggles with the fact that he is too weak to control the trajectory of his life. This ultimately gives him his will to find meaning in life, saving as many people as possible and deciding for himself when he dies. This theme and its implications are a vital point not to be overlooked when ending his character arc. Killing Itadori in a way he’s at peace with would be a solid conclusion to his character arc and the perfect ending to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Killing Itadori would give Jujutsu Kaisen a unique ending
It would also likely prove an iconic ending to the series itself, as – while anime is no stranger to killing off characters – the show’s plot revolves around several powerful characters developing an affinity for Itadori, suggesting he could be saved from execution with some scheme or other just in time to prevent his scheduled death. That said, it’s perhaps no surprise that Itadori died at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, since that’s what the story has promised since its first episode – but since he’s the main character, killing him definitely would always be a surprising, albeit deeply tragic, twist in the story.
The story of Jujutsu Kaisen’s protagonist, Yuji Itadori, is soon coming to an end with the end of the manga, and how it ends might be what decidedly sets Jujutsu Kaisen apart from other shonen. After seeing his character strive to save others and live his life as much as he can, his death would not only be memorable, but impactful. In the last moments of his death, Itadori’s grandfather leaves him two tasks; do whatever he can to save people and die surrounded by people who care about him. This mission is the driving force behind everything Itadori does, and seeing this mission come to fruition would be the perfect ending for Jujutsu Kaisen.
Why Sukuna’s Season 1 Role Suggests Itadori Must Die in Jujutsu Kaisen
Besides the fact that killing Itadori would be a resounding conclusion, Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sukuna has already made his death rather logistically inevitable. The entire series hinges on Itarodi being sentenced to death after consuming all of Sukuna’s fingers, as killing him will then be the only way to permanently get rid of the King of Curses. This has been in place since Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, and it means that whatever flaws are involved, Itadori will have to die at some point, even if only temporarily. As mentioned earlier, another Jujutsu Kaisen character could resurrect him or find another literal life hack, but it seems inevitable that Itadori will die before the series ends.
