manga manual

There are several types of manga, for different ages and different tastes. The best known is the Shōnen, from its translation of the Japanese “adolescent”, is a genre therefore addressed to adolescents. But not that… It features a lot of actions and characters that are initially weak, but through lots of training become stronger and stronger. The most famous manga of this genre are Dragon Ball, One Piece, full metal alchemist, narutoand Hunter X Hunter.

the Shojo, which means “girl” in Japanese. It’s a genre that targets a female audience. It illustrates the development of the feelings of the different characters and belongs rather to the category “Slice of Life”. The most popular Shōjo manga are Fruit Basket, Maid Sama, Paradise Kiss and Nana.

the Seinen is a rather mature genre. The plots are more complex and mature, and the themes are mysterious, even dark. These types of stories are often more believable. The best known Seinens are Bersek, Vagabond and Vinland Saga.

the josei is the female equivalent of Seinen, which targets an audience of young women, technically we could speak of a fusion between Seinen and Shojo. This genre gives more interest to the relationships and emotions of the characters.

Two other similar types of manga are the yaois and the Yuris. These are manga depicting same-sex relationships. The plots are rather romantic and sometimes erotic. The best example for the Yuri would be the manga Citrus from Saburouta and an example from Yaoi would be Sasaki To Miyano of Sho Harusono.
