Sukuna’s Cursed Energy Technique, Explained – GameSpot

Warning: Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen #119.

Ryomen Sukuna emerges as the undisputed king of curses in Jujutsu Kaisen, mainly due to the terrific use of his Cursed Energy Technique. Cursed techniques are used by most jujutsu wizards and cursed spirits in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, as it is a form of advanced jujutsu that grants users specialized abilities. These techniques can be used in ways inherent to the user, including barrier techniques, shikigami, and domain expansion.

To better understand the cursed technique of Sukuna, it is crucial to understand the basics of how cursed energy works. Jujutsu KaisenThe cursed spirits of are essentially born from cesspools of loss, fear, and despair, with the essence of these cursed energies fueling their respective abilities. Cursed energy can be used as both a weapon and a shield, although the effectiveness of each technique is entirely up to the user. Being a 1000-year-old cursed spirit, who was once a human sorcerer, Sukuna terrorized everyone during the golden age of jujutsu. His power has spanned the ages in his remnants of 20 indestructible fingers. After Yuji Itadori consumes one of Sukuna’s cursed fingers to save Megumi, Sukuna incarnates, using Yuji as a vessel.

Mirroring the trope of the demon sealed within – much like the figure of Kurama trapped inside Naruto Uzumaki – Sukuna shares his consciousness with Yuji and wreaks havoc whenever he gets the chance to take control. While explicit details about the extent of Sukuna’s powers are still shrouded in mystery, one of the first abilities revealed to the public is her ability to manipulate Yuji’s physical body. Upon transformation, Yuji’s body develops a second pair of glowing red eyes at the end of his cheekbone, with mouth-like slits appearing on various parts of Yuji’s body. This ability to control his vessel is shown in the Cursed Womb arc, in which Sukuna rips out Yuji’s heart as he couldn’t survive without it.

Sukuna’s Cursed Energy Technique Explained

Over time, it is revealed that Sukuna can use the Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself and others, such as when he helps Yuji regrow part of his hand after a fight with a cursed spirit. However, these actions are solely based on Sukuna’s secret and ever-changing whims, as he had refused to use the Reverse Cursed Technique to save Junpei, who had suffered an idle transfiguration at the hands of Mahito. Nonetheless, the Reverse Curse Technique is a rare ability to possess, even for a Special Grade Cursed Spirit. Even the formidable Gojo Satoru couldn’t use this ability during the heat of battle. In addition to this, Sukuna also possesses an innate Curse Technique, though the exact nature of it has yet to be revealed in the anime.

Moreover, in chapter 119 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, the narrator explains that Sukuna can use two distinct slash attacks, namely Dismantle and Cleave. While Dismantle is a basic offensive move, Cleave can be adapted depending on the nature of the attacker upon receiving the technique. Also, during Jujutsu KaisenIn the Shibuya Incident arc, Sukuna has shown the ability to manipulate fire and kill Jogo. This only goes to show that his knowledge of jujutsu far exceeds that of the more advanced cursed spirits, such as Hanami and Choso. It is also interesting to note that the expansion of the domain of Yuji/Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen has been called a divine technique and encompasses 200 meters, allowing it to wreak large-scale destruction with brutal efficiency.
