From this Monday, August 1, subscribers to the official account of Kaiju No. 8 on Twitter discovered a mysterious countdown with an end date of August 5, 2022 at midnight Japan time. The latter announced a video on the YouTube channel of the production company TOHO Animation.
If no release date has yet been revealed, we can estimate a broadcast date around the fall of 2023. The French broadcaster of the series is also not known at this time. However, the production company TOHO is behind other successes, such as My Hero Academia or Jujutsu Kaisen.
The trailer reveals very little information. The production team or the artistic distribution are still unknown as well as the animation studio in charge of the project or the dubbing voices.
The anime is an adaptation of the manga Kaiju No. 8, written and drawn by Naoya Matumoto. It has been pre-released since July 2020 on publisher Shueisha Shonen Jump+’s website and app. The first volume was released in October 2021 in France, translated by Sylvain Chollet at Kazé.
The synopsis of Kaiju N°8:
Kaiju are fearsome giant monsters that appear out of nowhere to attack the population. In Japan, these appearances are now part of everyday life.
As a child, Kafka Hibino dreamed of joining the Defense Forces to fight these terrible enemies, but after numerous failures in the entrance exam, this 30-year-old works to clean the streets of their bulky corpses. Until the day when a mysterious creature enters his body and transforms him into an overpowered entity half-human, half-kaiju. His new code name: “Kaiju No. 8”!
In September 2021, even before its release in France, the manga exceeded 4 million copies in circulation worldwide. This record made the Shonen Jump+ series the fastest to surpass this milestone. The manga has been nominated for several prestigious awards such as the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the Eisner Prize last May.
