Jujutsu Kaisen officially announced that a second season of the anime is in the works, but the main burning question following this announcement is when will the new episodes actually air? Considering the massive success of the anime’s first season, which not only led to an explosion in sales of Gege Akutami’s original manga series, but led to a new theatrical release that is now hitting all sorts of records in the box office, a second season of the series seemed like it was inevitable. Studio MAPPA later confirmed that was the case by announcing plans to release Season 2 next year.
Announced in preparation for release in 2023, Jujutsu Kaisen has yet to confirm many concrete details about what to expect from the new episodes. Outside of studio confirmation and likely cast feedback, there’s still a lot up in the air regarding its production team and potential release. This means that the best we can do is try to work out when the new episodes will arrive, and the prevailing theory among fans is that it will arrive in the winter 2023 window. While that’s a great prospect , this might not be entirely possible.
As for the general release window, Jujutsu Kaisen debuted in the fall 2020 anime schedule. While the half of winter 2021 is much more memorable thanks to the Kyoto goodwill event arc, if that timeline remains the same , it’s likely that we won’t see the third season until fall 2023. That might be a drop from summer 2023, but winter might just be wishful thinking. This is especially the case when considering the massive MAPPA workload that includes the still-ongoing series as Attack on Titan: Last part of season 2, series that have yet to debut like Chainsaw man, dance dancer, dancerand Heaven from Hell: Jigokurakuand new films in preparation for Zombie Land Saga and Yuri!!! On the ice.
These are also just the confirmed projects on the slate for this year (and potentially 2023), there are still tons more that could be in development at Studio MAPPA which in turn could keep the studio at a fixed production schedule despite how popular any given series might be. That’s not how it works. It also doesn’t take into account any plans for other movie sequels or seasons. It’s something we have to consider for the two Shonen Jump properties now under their belts with the huge Attack on Titan franchise (which would prevail even if MAPPA scheduled its projects based on popularity).
With the release slated for 2023, regardless of the time of year, at least Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will release next year. Barring other global pandemics that alter production in unforeseen ways, fans can set their clocks now. It’s gonna be big when it hits. What do you think?
