Among the countless amount of characters of My Hero Academia, Izuku Midoriya stands out for his unwavering will and positive personality, which is why it seems quite difficult for us to imagine this hero changing from being so bright to becoming darker. However, in the first designs that Kohei Horikoshi made of him we could see Deku, in civilian clothes and wearing his uniform, as a character much more similar to Batman than he and you You can see it with your own eyes below.
A much darker Deku
The initial sketches of Blanket, the undisputed protagonist of My Hero Academia season 5, were made by Kohei Horikoshi around the year 2009, but they were not shown to the public until 2016 with the publication of the book My Hero Academia Official Character Book Ultra Archive, the first collection of profiles of heroes and villains, as well as other curious data, that was made about this series.
The first thing that catches the eye of these sketches is the very different design that Horikoshi imagined for his protagonist. To get started, Deku’s hair would have been black and not green, plus it would have covered half of his face. His personality would have changed as well, showing himself much more defiant, perhaps sharing traits with Bakugo.
His hero uniform also received a substantial change, showing itself more intimidating than the officer and full of cartridges to store tools, which would supply the effectiveness of a Don (Let’s remember that Izuku was born without one).
In the following image we can admire Deku’s uniform in more detail. Sure, we don’t know what color palette the mangaka would have used, but for the name Izuku would have had as a hero (Fiend Kid, “Demon Boy”), we imagine that they would have been used in strong colors to enhance the character’s aura of threat.
Kohei Horikoshi’s admiration for the characters in Marvel and DC Comics, and in this first sketch of Deku we can perfectly notice those influences: some Batman, some Daredevil, and some of the Demon Etrigan were used to bring Izuku Midoriya to life.
Some fans of My Hero Academia They would have preferred to see Deku with the design that his creator had initially proposed, but the truth is that most of the enthusiasts of this work prefer that the character maintain the appearance that he has always had. Why should we change what is already perfect?
And you, what do you think of the initial designs that Izuku Midoriya had?
