Thermae Romae Novae Anime Coming to Netflix
Today March 28and, netflix released all eleven episodes of their brand new anime series Thermae Romae Novae.
The utterly ridiculous and equally hilarious series tells the story of a Roman architect called Lucius Modestus who struggles to think of innovations to help build his community and his legacy.
One day, he discovers a secret tunnel that takes him to a modern Japanese bathhouse, where he is amazed by the various “futuristic” inventions therein. He decides to use what he learned in the modern world to help build his own thermal bath in the Roman world, traveling back and forth through the mysterious tunnel.
“The main character is Lucius, a public baths engineer in the Roman Empire (CV #津田健次郎) For some reason, it became possible to time travel to the
Whenever Lucious is faced with a problem, he finds the necessary inspiration in the modern world to create his own legacy… Think Netflix’s hit anime The Way of the Househusband for a similar reference.

Some recognizable voices feature in a new series
While Thermae Romae Novae is a rather unique concept that few viewers expected, anime fans will definitely recognize some of the voice cast.
Playing Lucious is Tenjiro Tsuda, a veteran of the anime industry from Osaka Prefecture in Japan. The 50-year-old has starred in countless fantasy productions including Boruto, World Trigger, Baki and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun.
However, he’s arguably best known for playing Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh, Nathan Seymour (aka Fire Emblem) in Tiger and Bunny, as well as Overhaul in My Hero Academia.
Other notable roles include Vesta (TenSura), Johnny Bolt (Super Crooks), The Beholder (To Your Eternity), and Kento Nanami (Jujutsu Kaisen).
Interestingly, Tsuda also voiced gangster turned househusband Tatsu in the aforementioned The Way of the Househusband TV series.
Next to Tsuda are the following voice actors and actresses:
- Takahiro Sakurai as Yoshida (Suguru Geto, Jujutsu Kaisen 0)
- Yoshimasa Hosoya as Ceionius (Kirinmaru, Yashahime)
- Junya Enoki as Markus Annius (Rengoku, Demon Slayr)
- Satoshi Hino as Regulus (Ainz, Overlord)
- Asami Seto as Mari Yamaguchi (Nobara, Jujutsu Kaisen)
- Luis Bermudez as Attilanus (Peyote, Shaman King)
- Chikahiro Kobayashi as Marcus (Legoshi, Beastars)
- Shuichi Ikeda as Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Shanks, One Piece)
- Sanae Kobayashi as Sanae (Leslie, The Promised Neverland)
- Tsutomu Isobe as Emperor Hadrian (Dutch, Black Lagoon)
A franchise established thousands of years ago
The new anime series Thermae Romae Novae is an adaptation of the manga series by Mari Yamazaki.
However, this isn’t the first time fans of the original manga have seen Lucious grace our screens, both silver and small.
A six-episode flash anime series aired in Japan in 2012 to strong domestic reception. Yet, it was the live-action film in the Thermae Romae series that made headlines that same year.
The film enlarged over $75 million at the worldwide box office, which was the second highest-grossing film of 2012 in Japan.
Hiroshi Abe won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at 36and Japan Academy Film Prize as the one and only Lucious.
