Naruto, DBZ, SNK… Top 10 of the biggest censorships in anime

One Piece, Tokyo Revengers… Over time, anime have seen a lot of censorship. Censorships carried out when adapting a manga into an anime or between the different international versions. Here are 10, which have particularly marked the fans.

1/ Sanji’s cigarette (One Piece)

We all know Sanji and we know full well that he is a very heavy smoker. However, in the Cartoon Network version, he does not proudly butt, but instead lets himself be won over by gluttony. His cigarette was thus transformed into a lollipop and the shots where he lit the latter were replaced by an image of him, motionless.

2/ Weapons (One Piece)

We continue with One Piece, one of the most censored anime in history. This time it was the weapons that were doomed compared to the original version. When the anime was on TV, the guns were all replaced with another item. For example, when in the Japanese version, Hermep threatened Koby with a gun, in the Western version that aired on children’s channels, he threatened him with a kind of spring hammer.

3/ Rock Lee (naruto)

In one of the episodes of naruto, Rock Lee gets punched and bleeds profusely. In the censored version of the Cartoon Network channel, the blow looks much less violent and there is no longer any trace of hemoglobin.

4/ The seal of Neiji (naruto)

always in naruto, another element was censored, although this time it was not about violence. Neiji thus has a cursed seal on his forehead which represents “the caged bird”, but in the anime version, this symbol is replaced by a simple cross. The reason for this change is pretty obvious…

5/ The Tokyo Manjikai symbol (tokyo revenge)

The reason is the same as for the previous censorship. The Tokyo Manjikai sign represents a swastika, a symbol of peace in Asia. However, in Western countries, this symbol has a completely different meaning, having been used as a Nazi emblem. The cross was therefore replaced by big zooms as well as white flashes, which was heavily criticized by fans of tokyo revenge.

6/ The titans (SNK)

This censorship was carried out in Malaysia and may seem quite surprising to us, since it condemns nudity. However the titans of SNK, have no genitals, so it can’t directly offend society. However, the country preferred to dress them in shorts in the manga and anime.

7/ Violence (DBZ)

DBZ is like One Piece, naruto or pokemon, watched by many children. Because of this, the anime is experiencing a lot of modifications to be aired on TV channels. The slightest drop of blood is therefore completely removed!

8/ Meowth (Pokemon)

Pokemon is, of course, an anime watched by children, on the other hand, certain censorships can be absurd. Indeed, in one of the original scenes, Meowth holds a match to warm up from the cold, while in the United States, it is replaced by a birthday candle.

9/ Tatsu (The Way of the Apron)

anime The Way of the Apron has also had its share of censorship, and, this time again, violence is not at the heart of it. In China, tattoos are still frowned upon by society. Thus, the main character, Tatsu, had all his tattoos removed in this country.
