Naruto will have a new anime: it’s Sasuke Retsuden, which debuts in January

It’s not a Naruto remake and it’s not the Boruto reboot many expected, but it’s exciting news nonetheless. The big announcement for Naruto from Jump Festa 2023 was the confirmation that Sasuke Retsuden, one of the manga’s spin-offs, will be getting his own anime early next year. It will be a kind of arc within Boruto: Naruto Next Generation and it will be released on January 8, 2023.

Sasuke Retsuden was a short Naruto novel released in 2019 and, given its success, was adapted into a manga last October. Since then, five chapters have been released for free and it has become known as Naruto: Sasuke’s Story – The Uchiha and the Celestial Stardust. The anime will be integrated into Boruto, which will stop all filler, focus on it, and once finished, the long-awaited Code Arc will begin.

What is Sasuke Retsuden talking about?

Sasuke Retsuden is set after the events of Naruto Shippuden and shortly before those told in Boruto, just as Naruto contracts a fatal disease that renders him unable to use his chakra. After discovering that it could all be the so-called Shadow Kage’s fault, Sasuke and Sakura set out on a mission to find him and a cure for their friend, embarking together on a journey far from Tierra del Fuego that will put a… test “the spirit of husband and wife”.

Sasuke Retsuden is where Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship develops the most, explaining a romance that, at the start of Boruto, has become completely incomprehensible due to their coldness and distance. The original novel was written by Jun Esaka and had illustrations by Masashi Kishimoto, but its manga adaptation was directed by Shingo Kimura, who stopped showing his ego to clone Kishimoto’s art and won over fans. The series is already among the most read on Manga Plus and as soon as this anime repeats its charm, we are facing one of the great premieres of 2023.
