One Piece: the moving tribute to Naruto ⋆ JAPANFM

When Naruto wrapped up in 2014, One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda paid homage to the show, bringing the show’s two heroes together for a friendly meal.

The mangakas of Naruto and One Piece are well-known friends. Eiichiro Oda and Masashi Kishimoto’s hit manga were published in the same magazine and the two have revealed in interviews that they are in touch. They gave each other several winks, but one of the most touching came at the end of Naruto.

Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto, began serialization in the Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1999. The series ended in 2014 after a series of seven hundred chapters spread over seventy-two volumes. It was one of the three most popular and best-selling major shōnen manga during its duration, alongside Bleach and One Piece, only one of which is still in progress. However, in 2014, when Naruto was concluded, a tribute was paid to him by Oda, the mangaka from One Piece.

In chapter 766, in volume 77 of the pirate series, the cover page (or door page) of One Piece paid homage to Naruto, with a special message from Oda for Kishimoto. Several references to the series were placed in the world of One Piece using the characters, and fans quickly found the hidden message – even though Oda believed she had it hidden well enough that it remained a secret longer than ‘it has not been.

Nami is depicted in a dress with the Konoha leaf symbol imprinted on it. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of Naruto, as it is featured on the headbands of all the shinobi in the Hidden Leaf Village. Additionally, the kamaboko (fish cake) traditionally used in Naruto’s ramen can be seen on the back of the little fox in the foreground. This fox is another reference to Naruto, representing the titular hero’s fox demon, even though he only has one tail here. He was transformed into a companion similar to the Chopper from One Piece.

On the back of the menu panels, the first letters read “Naruto, otsukare-san deshita”, which translates to “Thank you for the great race, Naruto!”.

This cover page is all about food, which is a staple of both series and a love of the two main characters from Naruto and One Piece. In fact, this image also shows the two main characters eating each other’s favorite foods. Luffy, the Straw Hat Pirate Captain, eats a bowl of ramen, which appears to come from Naruto’s favorite ramen stand, Ichiraku, since the bowl has the same pattern that Naruto eats. Opposite Luffy is Naruto himself, hidden by Nami. Her designer shoes can be seen under the chair as well as traces of her outfit. He eats Luffy’s favorite meal, meat on the bone. The series may have been in minor competition with each other for readers’ attention, but the love between the mangakas of the series is very apparent. Naruto and Luffy would certainly be friendly rivals and the fact that they share a meal is totally fitting, especially since food is a subject that would bring them together. One Piece and Naruto are among the most popular manga series and this tribute is incredibly touching.
