“One Piece” is one of the longest-running and most popular manga-anime in history. Here are five reasons why you should start this series sooner rather than later.

On July 19, 1997, in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Eiichiro Oda gave birth to the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who set out to sea to become the king of pirates. In this way he was born one piece. After its success in sales, Toei Animation would take charge of its anime adaptation and so it was that on October 20, 1999 the first chapter of its animated version titled “I’m Luffy! The man who will become the Pirate King!”. Today, almost 25 years after the first publication of his manga and 22 years after the start of his anime, he is still as relevant as in those days and we will tell you why.

In many works, it is normal for animation studios to work the adaptation with certain creative freedoms. Due to the tight schedule of the mangaka, many of them do not have the time to draw their work and, at the same time, take care of supervising the animated version. Oda, a master of meticulousness, and with an overflowing passion for his work, is the exception to the rule and not only was he the first to design the character models for the animated version, but he is also constantly supervising the construction site. So much so that he even leaves notes on what images they can show in the openings or what elements of the work may or may not play in the movies. At the same time, he takes advantage of the animated version to suggest the introduction of extra scenes that help to further expand the universe of his work and that, due to the time and narrative rhythm of the manga, he must leave aside or summarize in a few panels. the anime of one piecethen, becomes the expanded and improved version of Oda’s manga.

Intrinsically related to the previous point, we must mention the construction of the world of one piece. Eiichiro Oda built a superficially simple story but extremely complex in depth. The world of one piece It is divided into four large seas which, in turn, are crossed by a large continent of reddish land in the southern direction called “Red Line”. In addition to this, there is also a great sea that crosses the world in an equatorial direction called the “Grand Line”. This world is largely covered with water and its countries or kingdoms are located on various islands.

Legend has it that the great pirate Gold Roger hid his great treasure on the last island of the “Grand Line” and whoever wanted power, wealth and fame could get it if he claimed his treasure. This gave rise to the great era of piracy where thousands of people went to sea in search of the famous treasure. Among them, our protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, motivated by his great friend and teacher: Shanks. However, this will not be an easy task because, to reach that last island, they will have to go through the strange climate and dangers of the Grand Line while avoiding other powerful pirates, the navy and the world government, the three great powers of this fictional world.

On the other hand, we do not want to fail to mention that, due to the immensity of this fictional world, Oda usually leaves clues, whether it be information, names of future characters, mythology, or planting small conflicts that will explode later in the story. In this way, events that occur in the first chapters of the anime and that seem insignificant can have a great impact on events that end up unfolding 500 chapters later, these being able to influence our main characters or the future of the configuration of the same world of the work. In this sense, it is natural that the feeling arises of being witnessing a window into a world that lives and breathes, of being part of a great adventure and being one of Luffy’s crew. At the same time, the existence of characters who are not subject to the main story or who only function and develop in the presence of the protagonists promote this sense of mobility and dynamism typical of one piece.

Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of this anime, a 17-year-old boy who went to sea with the aim of getting a crew and becoming the king of pirates. The gang of the straw hat or “Mugiwaras”, in its first season, is made up of: Zoro, a wandering pirate hunter with the goal of being the best swordsman in the world; Nami, a beautiful thief whose goal is to draw the first map of the entire world; Usopp, a young liar whose goal is to be a brave warrior of the sea; and Sanji, a chivalrous cook whose goal is to find the All Blue. Together they will embark on an adventure crossed by friendship and that will evolve as the chapters go by until they practically become a family. His various personalities and how they interact and evolve throughout the series is one of the great reasons for the success of one piece. They do not have static relationships, but these will be strengthened or eroded with respect to the different decisions or attitudes that they have throughout the series. In this sense, the great variety and number of secondary characters that they will meet on their adventure greatly influences. Different sexes, races and social status, but always with a unique personality that stands out from the rest. In one piece you will hardly find two characters that are the same either by personality or design, and that helps create the feeling of a living world. In turn, and although it may seem otherwise, in this series they are not governed by archetypes. There are good guys, bad guys and others who choose to take the position that suits them best according to the future of history. Although we position ourselves from the point of view of a pirate gang that becomes occasional heroes, in the world of one piece there are also evil pirates. The Marines, tasked with stopping these pirates, also share this complexity and there will be a lot of internal questioning from members of this organization throughout the story. For this reason, we invite you to venture into this anime and discover these diverse characters for yourselves.

like all good shonen of fights, in one piece conflicts are also often resolved with blows. This is where the abilities of the characters come into play, either through the devil fruits –fruits that give whoever eats them certain characteristics and abilities in exchange for not being able to swim– or by hand-to-hand fighting skills or swords, in one piece the fights are usually developed with great ingenuity and, at least in their first seasons, it is not the strongest who wins but who is more perceptive to exploit the weakness of his opponent. Being a multi-character crew, the diversity of this vast world ends up spilling over into their fights. Each character uses different methods, from the confrontation by brute force represented in Zoro, Usopp’s “hit, run and dodge” or the plasticity of a rubber man as in the case of Luffy, capable of adapting to any situation that arises. I present to you. In any case, it is undeniable that, as happens in Jojo´s Bizarre Adventureeach fight is unique and will result in joy and laughter in equal parts.

The last reason may seem strange. Today, one piece It has more than 1,000 episodes on the air and continues to air week after week, this being one of the main reasons that keep new audiences from entering this adventure. However, this is also one of its strengths. The large number of mysteries, characters and stories that there are to tell in the world created by Eiichiro Oda it is so vast and rich that, for those who are already immersed in the work, it even sounds like little. One of the great messages of this anime is that it’s not really the ending that matters, but the journey. Embarking and enjoying every moment of it is much more important than being aware of quickly finishing a work and moving on to the next. This point may be misunderstood by those who have not yet started the journey, but it will be enough for them to start this challenge, and when they least expect it they will be one more member of the Mugiwara crew wishing that this journey never ends.

one piece It is the best-selling manga in history and one of the most popular anime today. We chose these 5 reasons, but they are not the only ones. To finish discovering the great world built by Eiichiro OdaWe invite you to start it. It is currently available in its entirety on Crunchyroll and up to chapter 130 on Netflix, with new batches of episodes being added periodically on the red N.
