A nice schedule is shaping up for anime fans in the coming months, with several movies and new adaptations.
In 2021, anime followers were able to discover many adaptations of their favorite manga. For this new year, the program promises to be as rich, or even more, in particular thanks to the returns of heavyweights like Dragon Ball, One Piece or My Hero Academia.
1 Kakegurui Twin, on Netflix in August 2022
Launched in 2015 by Square Enix editions, the manga Kakegurui Twin is a prequel to Gambling School and currently counts 12 volumes, available from Soleil Manga editions. A year before Yumeko enters high school, the Hyakkao establishment welcomes an ambitious young scholarship student, Mary. The latter quickly becomes a target for her comrades, but her composure, her tenacity and her ambition will very quickly work in her favor, even if she feels no pleasure in the game. Like many manga, the he work imagined by Kawamoto Homura and Saiki Kei will also be entitled to its animated adaptation, which should logically arrive on Netflix this summer. The number of episodes is still unknown, and it is once again the Mappa studio, which has already worked on Kakegurui Where Jujutsu Kaisen, who is in charge of the project.
2 Cyberpunk Edgerunners , on Netflix in 2022
After a launch close to chaos, Cyberpunk 2077 is gradually restoring its image and should finally offer an optimal gaming experience in 2022. Important to CD Projekt Red, the license Cyberpunk is probably only in its infancy and the publisher has many projects to develop it. The synopsis of this animated series remains mysterious, but we already know that viewers will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Night City, to meet new characters. Supervised by Studio Trigger, season 1 of this anime will consist of ten episodes, expected on Netflix later this year.
3 My Hero Academia season 6, on DNA in 2022
In 2022, French fans of My Hero Academia will be able to discover World Heroes Mission, the last feature film derived from the franchise released last summer in Japan. Along with this new movie, we will also witness the end of the manga and the airing of the highly anticipated season 6 of the anime. Scheduled for fall 2022, it will adapt the narrative arc of the Paranormal Liberation War, a section that continues with the recent volume 31 published last January. Directed by the animation studio BONES (present on the adaptation since the very first season), this season 6 should logically be broadcast on the streaming platform ADN, which is already streaming the first five seasons.
4 Suzume no Tojimari, in theaters in 2022
Six years after the highly acclaimed Your Name, filmmaker Makoto Shinkai will be making a comeback in 2022 with a new animated work, which has just been revealed. Entitled Suzume Locking Up the Doors, the feature film is produced by the CoMix Wave Films studio and can count on the presence of Kenichi Tsuchiya and Takumi Tanji, respectively animation director and artistic director. On the plot side, we follow Suzume, a 17-year-old heroine “drawn into an adventure when she follows a young traveler into the mountains. The latter tells him that he is looking for a mysterious door, surrounded by ruins. As if drawn to something, Suzume unlocks the door, unsure of what’s on the other side. But his action opens several other doors across Japan, inviting an unknown danger into the world. To repair the damage, Suzume sets out on a journey to lock those doors.”.
5 Uzumaki, during 2022
Adapted from the manga of the same name by Junji Ito, Uzumaki immerses us in the city of Kurouzu, where the protagonist (Kirie Goshima) leads a simple and peaceful life. However, she notices that something is wrong: spirals seem to have invaded the city, and its inhabitants are acting strangely. Little by little, the whole city descends into madness, in a macabre atmosphere. Junji Ito being considered in Japan as one of the great masters of horror, needless to say that this adaptation promises to give some chills. Delayed due to the health situation, the anime should finally be released in 2022. As a reminder, it is produced by Drive studios and IG Production USA.
6 Chainsaw Man, during 2022
This anime promises to highlight suffering bodies (as in the manga from which it is adapted). The world in which Denji and his friends evolve is particularly dark: despair drives men to monetize certain parts of their bodies to take advantage of their powers. Thus, before becoming a demon, Denji had sold one of his eyes and other limbs. Supervised by the MAPPA studio, a new reference in Japanese animation, the arrival of Denji, the chainsaw man on screens will take place in 2022, with no specific release date yet.
7 Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, in theaters in 2022
More than 30 years of intense fights and not a single wrinkle for Sangoku and his friends, who are still very popular with the general public. The universe imagined by Akira Toriyama will develop again in 2022 with the upcoming arrival of a highly anticipated film. Entitled Super Hero, it is announced as a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Super : Broly, released in 2018. In this new adventure, the Red Ribbon army (an evil organization once defeated by Goku) is back with the creation of new androids who will go after the heroes. Expected on April 22 in Japanese theaters, the film, announced as a return to basics, will also be entitled to its release in France, but the date is currently unknown.
8 Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Arc , in October 2022 on Crunchyroll
Left hanging since 2013, the anime Bleach will make a comeback at the end of the year with the adaptation of the manga’s final narrative arc: The Bloody War of 1,000 years. This one will place us in the heart of Soul Society, when the disappearance of several members of the Rukongai is noticed, at the same time as the elimination of many Hollows from the world of the living. Meanwhile, Ichigo encounters an Arrancar named Ebern Asguiaro, who tries to steal his bankai. The story will also focus on Yamamoto, who learns that Soul Society will be destroyed in five days. Still produced by the Pierrot studio, this adaptation is directed by Tomohisa Taguchi, Masashi Kudô officiates in character design and Shiro Sagisu in the composition of the soundtrack.
9 One Piece Red, in theaters in 2022
Last month, fans of One Piece (whose launch of volume 100 caused a stir) had learned with joy of the existence of a new film, entitled Red. According to the first information, this feature film is centered on Shanks le Roux, captain of the Roux crew and one of the Four Emperors of the Seas. Furthermore, the film should “to be hot”, namely integrated into the main story of One Piece. Expected in Japanese theaters on August 6, the fifteenth film in the franchise should logically be entitled to its release in French theaters, probably a few months later.
10 Ao Ashi , during 2022
A fairly popular theme in the world of manga, football will once again be in the spotlight in 2022 with Ao Ashi, adaptation of the manga written and drawn by Yûgo Kobayashi. Arriving in French bookstores last year, the manga revisits the genre of nekketsu, specific to many works taking place in the world of sport. Presumably faithful to the basic material, the anime will follow the journey of Ashito, future football prodigy whose career will be disrupted by various pitfalls and challenges.
