In the summer of 2017, we learned that One Piece, manga and anime now cult for a whole generation, will also have the right to its adaptation live-action, which could be scary at the time. Since then, many projects of this type have emerged with varying degrees of success. At the start of 2020, another stone was added to the building, namely that Netflix is in charge of the project in collaboration with Tomorrow Studios for a first season of 10 episodes the first of which will obviously be called Romance Dawn, unveiled last September with the logo stylized that will be used. That night, as part of the Netflix Japan Festival 2021, it’s the main cast that was introduced.
So the main character Monkey D. Luffy will be played by Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy, son second Zoro Roronoa par Mackenyu Arata (Ryoichi Hatayama in Pacific Rim: Uprising and soon Seiya in the future adaptation live-action Knights of the Zodiac), the lovely sailor Us will have the features of Emily Rudd (Cindy Berman and Abigail in Fear Street), the affabulator Usopp will be played by Jacob Romero Gibson (appearances in Grey’s Anatomy and The Resident, among others) and the romantic cook Sanji will be performed by Taz Skylar. Clearly, the shock is severe and it is for the moment quite difficult to imagine the characters that we have followed for more than two decades in the guise of these actors … As always, wait & see.
The author Eiichirō Oda has for his part been asked to comment on this revelation and here is the translation of his message:
We worked with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios on the massive project which is the adaptation of the One Piece live-action series in Hollywood! It’s been many years since it was first announced, hasn’t it? I know I know ! But rest assured, we’ve made steady progress from the start! It’s not easy when you work with people from different cultures! But it is precisely this process that can give something special! For now, we are able to announce the main cast! Without a doubt, we have to hurry and announce it or else it will leak, apparently! Hilarious, lol. Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they hold themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance within the Straw Hat crew, etc. . !
We chose this cast after a lot of discussions involving people from all over the world! These are the people who will be the Straw Hat Pirates! It will take a little longer to complete this show, but we will continue to do our best to deliver a show that we are sure will please everyone across the world! Expect more updates in the future!
