A 1000th episode: A first in history?

It is not every day that we can attend the broadcast of the 1000th episode of an animated series or not for that matter. It is not Love, Glory and Beauty but above all The Young and the Restless. These televised sagas culminate respectively and alone at 8,636 and 12,228 episodes. For comparison, the Doctor Who sci-fi series only has 685 episodes. Now let’s come back to the subject that interests us in particular, the Japanese animated series.

The longevity of One Piece is exceptional both on paper and on the small screen / big screen. The saga is about to cross after more than 20 years of broadcasting the symbolic bar of 1000 episodes. We would be right to think that this kind of event is rare. In the 21st century, reaching the 1000th episode is not easy, especially for a series that began at the dawn of the 2000s.

One Piece occupies on November 20, 2021 the 17th position in the ranking of the most prolific Japanese animated series. Before his adventures are over, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew should gain some places, but the fight is likely to be fierce. Many sagas are still in production at the time of this writing … 8 to be precise. Among these, we find Detective Conan (1,025 episodes), Ojarumaru (1,857 episodes) and Nintama Rantaro (2,245).

The first place in this ranking is occupied by an anime which, given its lead, is and will remain unassailable for decades, even centuries to come. This animated series broadcast for the first time on October 5, 1969 is called Sazae-san, and in 2021 has more than 7,500 episodes. which allows it to be listed in the Guinness Book of Records. It must be said that it has been more than half a century that Sazae-san has been a regular guest on Japanese television.

What about the shonen? From Naruto, Dragon Ball, Fairy Tail, Bleach & Co.? One Piece has virtually no equivalent in terms of the number of episodes broadcast, even if the case of Naruto is a particular strand. Indeed, the saga of Masashi Kishimoto actually consists of three distinct series, namely Naruto / Naruto: Shippuden / Boruto: Naruto Next Generations for a total of 993 episodes … knowing that the last one is still in production. Luffy versus Naruto (and his descendants)… to be continued!

As for Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama’s cult work is adapted in several successive series, and continued one decade after another. The animated adaptations made by the Toei, namely Dragon Ball (153) / Dragon Ball Z (291) / Dragon Ball GT (64) / Dragon Ball Super (111) peak at 619 episodes, clearly far behind One Piece. As a reminder, the animated series is far from having finished its journey.
