News culture One Piece, Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen … We know the ranking of the most distributed manga of the year
If the year is not yet completely over, Oricon takes advantage of the month of November to take stock of annual manga sales. A ranking that includes the essential Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer or One Piece, and with the nice surprise Tokyo Revengers.
- Jujutsu Kaisen, the new Demon Slayer?
- One Piece dethroned, for good?
Like every year, at the end of November, the Japanese company Oricon specializing in data compilation unveiled the ranking of the most distributed manga. While this list only concerns physical distributions in Japan, it can nevertheless serve as a trend indicator.
Jujutsu Kaisen, the new Demon Slayer?
And it is without surprises that we find Jujutsu Kaisen at the head of the ranking, with 30.9 million manga sold between November 2020 and November 2021. If the first volume was published in 2017 in Japan, the work of Gege Akutami has enjoyed an incredible rise in popularity thanks to its animated adaptation. Released in 2020 and produced by MAPPA studios (behind the fourth season of Attack on Titan), it probably contributed to manga sales since in 2020, Jujutsu Kaisen recorded “only” 6.7 million units sold .
The second place is occupied by Demon Slayer, who continues to have a monster influence in Japan: it is 29.5 million units sold for the work of Koyoharu Gotoge, while the last volume of the saga was released in November 2020 on the Japanese archipelago. A finding that we also observe for Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan): fourth in this ranking with 7.3 million manga distributed, the final part of the saga was released on June 9th. It is Tokyo Revengers, with 24.9 million copies, which completes the podium.
One Piece dethroned, for good?
Despite years of being at the top, One Piece is starting to lose its luster. Blame it on too many volumes? Despite an honorable score of 7 million units passed, this is the first time since 2008 (and the existence of this ranking) that the work of Eiichiro Oda has been ejected from the top 5. New record for Demon Slayer : after its 80 million manga distributed in 2020 (Kindgom 2nd … with 8.2 million), it has achieved the feat of becoming the first manga to sell five million units of the same volume. For his part, Jujutsu Kaisen becomes the second series to beat One Piece in terms of units sold for the same copy.

02. Kimetsu no Yaiba Gaiden –2.374.621
03. Jujutsu Kaisen 14 –2.312.250
04. Jujutsu Kaisen 15 –2.306.950

Is this the end for One Piece? While it is true that we observe a downward trend for Luffy and his companions, it should be noted that the work of Eiichiro Oda shows a sacred longevity and continues to sell despite the number of volumes reached by the ‘artwork. Figures that may be inflated in 2022 thanks to the release of the 100th volume and the 1000th episode, and whose story is inevitably approaching the end.
