Do you know the most popular manga in France? It is One Pieceby Eiichiro Oda, narrating the adventures of the pirate Monkey D. Luffy on vast oceans in search of a mythical treasure with his explosive crew.
The enthusiasm is palpable on the occasion of the release of the 102nd volume of the saga in France, which began in 2000 (1997 in Japan). It comes at the same time as his 25th birthday.
An ideal context for organizing the night One Pieceon the model of Harry Potter. From 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday, September 13, 2022, in Alsace, Lorraine, and Champagne-Ardenne, these are 22 participating bookstores to the festivities (visible on the map below).
France 3 Champagne-Ardenne contacted three of these bookstores to find out more. In Reims (Marne), it’s the bookstore Bederama – Comics Channel who is at work. The bookseller in charge of the event, Valentin Fauvet, explains that “It’s a bit of a special night. This summer was the 25th anniversary of the publication of One Piece in Japan. In France, it was 20 years [en 2021] and the publisher Glénat had released collector’s editions. This year, he is organizing an exceptional night. We play on the fact that we are the only ones in Reims to organize this; even if there is Culture of Cormontreuil but it’s not quite in Reims.”
The success of One Piecemanga “which speaks to everyone and where we find elements of our history”let it be found “everywhere. Between toys, clothes, posters, anime, movies… It’s the best-selling work of fiction in the world, I’m sure if it’s talked about in any country, people know what that’s even if they haven’t read it. And I think the only book in front is the Bible: the numbers aren’t very clear.”

“The idea is that there are a lot of animations: a large exhibition with around forty boards from the manga, a photobooth with a poster reproducing a wanted poster because the pirates in One Piece are not badly sought after, a drawing contest, quizzes to test your knowledge of the universe…”
There will even be a tattoo stand (obviously reserved for those over 18). The bookstore isn’t huge, but the L’Étape gallery where it is located will house it all while waiting for what the fans are waiting for. “The highlight is the sale of volume 102, which comes out on September 13, but we have permission to sell it tonight and we are offering an extra giant frieze.”
“It really is the best-selling manga in the world”confirms Anaïs Staender, the manager of the Inari Temple in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin). “We can do a lot of animations and sell giveaways. We’re kind of in the idea of when they were going out Harry Potter in bookstores at midnight. The goal is really to offer people the opportunity to pick it up in advance, but also to meet up with fans and spend some time around a manga that brings people together.”
On the program of the small Japanese shop: blind testphotographs with cosplayersand even the possibility of playing a console game provided by the local association Geek Unchained. “Glénat also offered to booksellers to collect drawings and letters from fans. We’ll collect them until September 30, and we’ll send them to be transferred directly to Japanese author Eiichiro Oda.”
Eiichiro Oda was also on the poster for the Japan Addict Z, organized in June 2022 at the Zénith de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). At the maneuver, Fabrice Dunis, the boss of the Kakemono association and bookstore The Camphor Tree. The latter was lent by the President of the Republic himself a drawing by the author. A work that was offered as a diplomatic gift to France. During the two days of the convention, just under 20,000 fans were able to admire it, displayed under a window. The Consulate General of Japan, active in its promotion of Asian culture in eastern France, echoed this (visible in the tweet below).
The opportunity to deliver a sacred anecdote for Fabrice Dunis. “For the Tokyo Olympics, Emmanuel Macron went to Japan. He is not insensitive to the art of manga. He had asked to meet mangakas during this trip. He met at least, m they said, those who made One Piece, DragonBalland naruto. Eiichiro Oda offered this autographed board for the president and all the fans of France. We got wind of it, we wanted to give it a shot and applied for a loan with the help of our deputy Bruno Studer… and they said yes. With a caveat from Emmanuel Macron: ‘be careful, I really care about it’. He didn’t say it that way, but that was the idea. It is a unique piece that had never left the palace.”
“It’s been a real phenomenon for 25 years. So much so that in Japan, One Piece has passed the stage of manga, even those who do not read it read it. And it is a longevity record, especially for a first work. You should know that the author is 47 years old and has done this all his life, so already 25 years old: he started super young. In short, “It really is an absolute reference.”
Fans therefore take it for granted: this anniversary will be memorable.
