After playing for a couple of hours One Piece Odyssey Several doubts have arisen, but fortunately I have cleared up the most important one that I had when I started testing it. Thus, I can already say that it is the game that best reflects the anime of all those that have been released.
We have been enjoying video games based on One Piece for more than 20 years and after 40 different titles finally we can enjoy one that really perfectly recreates the essence of the saga. It seems strange to say this because anyone who watches two minutes of the series will think that it is an anime that is about people giving each other cakes, but in reality Eiichiro Oda’s work goes on adventures and that is precisely what we will have in One Piece Odyssey.
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of One Piece
As explained by the game’s producer (Katsuaki Tsuzuki) during the interview that we kept with him, “One Piece Odyssey has been created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the franchise. Our goal is to allow players to step into the shoes of the Straw Hat Pirates and enjoy the charisma of these characters and the world of One Piece.”.
To immerse ourselves in this world they have decided to bet on a JRPG of turn-based combat for the first time in the history of the One Piece universe. As stated by its producer, “It’s the best way to bring the different personalities of the crew members into the game. It’s the story of all of them, not just Luffy.”.
During our first hours with the game this is very evident. Both during the exploration and in the combats, the leading role is shared among all the members of the crew. While we investigate the scenarios we can make use of the unique abilities of each of the characters. Luffy, for example, can extend his arm to reach ledges which he then swings off to reach new areas. Zoro, for his part, can destroy metal boxes to find new objects, Sanji finds cooking materials that no other hero can see, etc…

One Piece Odyssey – Gameplay Trailer | PS5 & PS4 Games
At the moment we have not been able to enjoy the story much because as a good JRPG it will be a very long and slow-paced game, but we do know some brushstrokes. “The story begins with the Straw Hat Pirates being shipwrecked on Waford Island and losing all their powers” Tsuzuki-san tells us. The development of the game began five years ago, so logically the plot is not updated to the current events of the anime.
Four things that I loved about One Piece Odyssey
At first glance it looks like a very conventional JRPG, like a clone of Dragon Quest that uses the characters from One Piece. However, we are facing a game that, without leaving the patterns of the genre, it does include quite original elements.
