Planetary success, the manga created by Eiichiro Oda continues to be the subject of new adaptations often supervised by the author himself. This is the case of the adaptation in live-action series by Netflix. Announced in July 2017 for the 20th anniversary of the saga, the series is still not available in the catalog of the SVOD platform. For good reason, the large-scale filming (we are talking about 100 million dollars for the series) delayed on numerous occasions due to the health crisis. Nevertheless, we have known since May that the filming of the first two episodes is finished. In the process, it is a photo shared on Instagram six weeks ago which evokes the end of the shooting. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Shanks… Who will embody the essential characters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga? The main character of Luffy will be played by the young Iñaki Godoy (Who Killed Sarah?, The Imperfects). It is Mackenyu (Pacific Rim: Uprising) who will lend his features to the swordsman Zoro while the service cook in the person of Sanji is interpreted by Taz Skylar (Villain, Boiling Point). Usopp (Pipo in French) will be worn by Jacob Gibson (Blairdsen, Green Leaf) and Nami will be played by Emily Rudd (Hunters, The Romanoffs).
But that’s not all ! Many characters and antagonists of the first season also know the actors who will lend their features. Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Aidan Scott (Action Point), Jeff Ward (hacks), McKinley Belcher III (Ozark), Vincent Regan (troy) as well as Alexander Maniatis, Steven Ward, Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood, Celeste Loots and Chioma Umeala will also be there. Without forgetting Peter Gadiot for the role of Shanks.
With the adaptation of such a work, Netflix shows the will to do something big: it is more than 100 volumes and more than 1000 episodes which constitute the original materials. The director behind the camera for this adaptation is Steven Maeda. He is first of all a screenwriter who has worked on numerous television series such as X-Files, Lost: The Disappeared or even CSI: Miami. A writing for which he will not be the only one in charge since more than 10 people, including Tom Hyndman (Harley Quinn, Alcatraz) and Matt Owens (Luke Cage, Agents of SHIELD) have joined him in this task. The manga’s author, Eiichiro Oda, obviously oversaw the project as an executive producer.
If it is Netflix which is in charge of the distribution, we observe that it is Shueisha and Tomorrow Studios in charge of the production. The latter is well known since he participated in the live-action adaptation of cowboy bebop (which we hope One Piece will not share the same fate) but also to that of Snowpiercer.
