One Piece to beat Harry Potter and Batman sales records

One Piece is about to become the first manga series in history with a circulation of more than 500 million copies, which means that it is also on the verge of breaking some sales records set by other pop culture icons, such as Harry Potter and Batman.

That’s what the new sales data and predictions collected by reddit user OHandS say. Using Oricon’s recently released sales charts for 2021, as well as sales data collected from other outlets and prior years, OHandS shared a series of charts detailing One’s sales. Piece from 2008 to now. The math buff concluded that the Oda’s pirate epic should exceed total comics sales in Batman – about 495 million copies – and could even exceed the half billion mark before the end of the year. One Piece it will also break the record of approximately 500 million copies sold of the best-selling book series of all time, Harry Potter, if current sales trends are maintained.

One Piece will break these records despite experiencing a slow decline in total sales. OHandS notes that despite all the hype for chapter 1,000 and volume 100 of the series, the series has seen a small but steady decline in sales since the start of the current Wano Country arc. Although the series is virtually guaranteed to pass the 500 million mark, this slow decline may hamper the series’ chances of surpassing the 600 million number sold of Superman. OHandS speculates that the series could see a sales spike if the series’ next and potentially final story arc generates enough buzz for the series finale, or if Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation succeeds in attracting new audiences.

Despite that decline, One Piece overall remained the sixth best-selling manga series in Japan in 2021, ranking just behind My Hero Academiaby Kohei Horikoshi, but putting the 24-year-old series ahead of more recent hits like Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man. The best-selling manga series of the year was Jujutsu Kaisenby Gege Akutami, which managed to sell 30 million copies in 2021, despite taking a two-month hiatus this summer. Akutami’s dark fantasy shonen series narrowly surpassed Demon Slayer, by Koyoharu Gotouge : Kimetsu No Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge, which sold 29.5 million copies in its final year of serialization.

One Piece is located and distributed in North America by VIZ Media. The anime adaptation of the series, which recently aired its historic 1,000th episode, is available to stream through Crunchyroll and Funimation.
