One Piece’s Luffy May Be Unleashing Even Greater Power Than Fifth Gear

Luffy could awaken immense power to defeat Kaido!

During the ending of the last chapter of One Piece, It seems that Luffy is nowhere near taking his powers to the next level, but not in the way that many fans thought it would be.. One Piece is a manga by Eiichiro Oda that follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy in his quest to become the king of pirates, which is why the story has focused on this cute character. And throughout the series, it is true that Luffy has not stopped getting stronger, however, he may be about to increase his power level in the most drastic way we have known him so far.

Notably in the world of One Piece there are various power systems. For example, the Devil Fruit abilities are the simplest system in it, as it only involves someone eating a magic item called a Devil Fruit for it to give them a special ability. Devil Fruit users who are especially skilled at using their fruit can boost their powers even further in a process called “Awakening”. Awakening significantly increases the powers of a given Devil Fruit and can sometimes even manifest new abilities for the user. In this case, Luffy has eaten the Gum Gum no Mi, which has given him the ability to turn his body into rubber. During the series he has used this power on multiple occasions in quite creative ways to create devastating attacks such as the Gum Gatling and Gear Third.

After learning Haki, One Piece’s second power system, Luffy also added it to his attacks to develop the powerful Gear Fourth attacks we know. Given the progression of the names of the attacks from Third to Fourth Gear, many fans have theorized that Luffy would re-fuse his powers to make an impressive “Fifth Gear” technique, however, the end of the last chapter seems to suggest a much larger power increase.

Luffy could develop a much more complex technique for his next fights against a warlord

At the end of chapter 1043, Luffy apparently lies dead after being defeated by Kaido, the warlord. However, in the last couple of panels, his heart starts beating again and he smiles as his body begins to melt into liquid rubber. Since the powers of Doflamingo and Katakuri, who have awakened as Devil Fruits, allow them to transform objects around them into ropes and mochi, respectively, it makes quite a bit of sense that Luffy would have the ability to turn his body into liquid rubber, since what it is an ability of his awakened Devil Fruit. So this last panel implies that Luffy has finally awakened his Devil Fruit powers and therefore that he will use these new powers in order to defeat Kaido.

In fact, Eiichiro Oda has subtly laid the groundwork for this awakening over the course of the Onigashima raid. Seeing some of Luffy’s fighting skills during their fight, Kaido pointed out that the rubber shouldn’t be able to move the way Luffy did. This means that Luffy was already pushing the limits of his own abilities even before the end of chapter 1043. From a more panoramic point of view, Luffy’s enemies, Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kidd awakened their Devil Fruit abilities during their match against Big Mom.another warlord allied with Kaido, so in this sense, it stands to reason that Luffy also demonstrates his hidden powers during his fight against a warlord.

To tell the truth, awakening this kind of powers would be a big step for Monkey D. Luffy and this fact would make him one of the most powerful characters in the entire series. And, to prove it to the whole world, he would have to defeat Kaido. Considering the incredibly strong powers of other awakened Devil Fruits, it is very likely that Luffy will be able to accomplish this feat without any problem and shake up the entire history of One Piece from the inside out.
