We were able to test One Piece Odyssey for about twenty minutes. Does the JRPG manage to live up to expectations?
One Piece Odyssey, excessive expectations
One Piece Odyssey is still scheduled for the end of 2022. Fans of One Piece impatiently waiting for this new adventure after several games adapted from the rather disappointing license. A heresy for the work of Eiichirō Oda appreciated worldwide, while the video game adaptations of dragonball Where narutoto name but a few, are often of high quality. One Piece Odyssey, does it meet expectations? We were able to test a 20-minute demo showcasing the game’s turn-based combat system developed by ILCA.
In this demo of One Piece Odyssey, our mission was to save Nami from the clutches of a gigantic gorilla. First observation, the cel shading of the game works, without being breathtaking. We instantly recognize the Mugiwara (our starting team consisted of Luffy, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Nico Robin and Franky). The sets don’t really pay homage to the PS5. Everything is quite basic, even if the artistic direction catches up with everything.
No action, but a well-honed combat system
If you ever missed the information, One Piece Odyssey is not an action game, puts a turn-based RPG whose combat interface seems to come directly from Persona. You lead a team of four characters. During his turn, you can perform three actions: the classic attack, the use of an object or a skill. These will speak directly to fans of the series and are excellently staged.
Original fact: the points to be spent to use them are cumulative, and do not return to an initial value after each fight, as is the case in lots of JRPGs. It is therefore possible to accumulate a large number of them to use your most powerful skills against bosses.
Peculiarity of the combat system of One Piece Odyssey, the importance of positioning. Enemies are distributed by area. Leaving one of your heroes alone against two enemies can get you in trouble. You will therefore have to use tactics and adaptability to win and not find yourself surrounded. Precisely, certain special situations called “dramatic scenes” (a character surrounded or with extremely low HP) can occur during combat. Your priority will be to quickly respond to the situation so as not to lose.
A rather summary staging, saved by the voice acting
Also know that each of your characters has an attack style: strength, technique or speed. This rock-paper-scissors system is essential for dealing greater damage to enemies. You can switch characters on the fly to best deal with the situation. With the demo set to easy mode, having perfect tactics wasn’t necessary to win. But at high level, fights should offer enough challenge so that mastery of the gameplay is essential.
Although this demo of One Piece Odyssey was centered on the combat system, we were also able to see the work done on the staging. This one turns out to be rather classic, but voice acting brings honor to the characters of One Pieceand makes it fun to follow. Finally, the area to cover in this tutorial was quite small, but One Piece Odyssey should offer much less cramped environments in the rest of his adventure.
What we have seen from One Piece Odyssey was quite promising. The turn-based combat system is very effective and its mechanics promise very tactical clashes at a high level. Let’s hope that there are many epic moments and that the adventure takes us on board despite the graphics and staging not being the most engaging.
