Rocks D. Xebec is inspired by Benjamin Hornigold!

Rocks D. Xebec is considered the most famous pirate in the One Piece universe. We don’t know much about him, so everything else is speculation about the possible inspired origins of Captain Benjamin Hornigold, a real life pirate.

It is said that Rocks appeared in Hachinosu and gathered a crew of the most powerful pirates with the intention of overthrowing the world government and becoming king of the world.

Benjamin Hornigold helped establish Nassau, the “Pirate Republic”, and in 1717 he was captain of one of the most heavily armed ships in the region, called the Ranger. This ship allowed him to seize other ships with impunity. The Rocks crew didn’t have much camaraderie within them and had opposing personalities, but Xebec held them together using sheer force.

A “Xebec” is a Mediterranean vessel that was generally used by merchants. In the spring of 1717, Benjamin Hornigold successively seized three merchant ships. He achieved this with the help of his second in command Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard.

When Hornigold became captain of the Ranger, he gave his old ship to Blackbeard. We believe the fact that Blackbeard’s ship is named the “Saber of Xebec” is a reference to this, in addition to his other ties to Xebec in the story.

Going back to the seizure of ships with impunity, we believe it has something to do with the Xebec pirates. Regarding the three merchant ships, one was Spanish, carrying 120 barrels of flour bound for Havana, another was a Bermudian sloop with a cargo of spirits and the third a Portuguese ship from Madeira with a cargo of white wine .

It is possible that these boats are a reflection of the three Yonko who were part of the crew of the Rocks. Flour is the mirror of Big Mom and her addiction to sweets, the cargo of spirits is the mirror of Kaido and his alcoholism, and the cargo of white wine is the mirror of Whitebeard.

During one voyage, Hornigold’s ship was caught in a hurricane and wrecked on an uncharted reef.

The incident is mentioned in an account and describes this:

In one of these voyages… Captain Hornigold, another of the famous pirates, died on some rocks, a great distance from land, but five of his men got into a canoe and were saved

The “Rocks” in Rocks D. Xebec comes from how Captain Benjamin Hornigold died, and it seems to us that the 5 men who were saved are also important. Five members of the Rocks Pirates crew had a big impact on the world of One Piece after the death of Rocks D. Xebec.

Captain John has collected one of the greatest treasures of all pirates. Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom all became Yonko and were feared as the strongest pirates to ever sail the seas. And then there’s Shiki, the infamous pirate who clashed with Roger’s crew multiple times and became the first inmate to escape Impel Down.
