The new One Piece villain could be Zoro’s father

Sounds like it would be an interesting family reunion…

According to a fan theory and some major nods throughout the franchise, Admiral ‘Green Bull’ Ryokugyu from One Piece could actually be the legendary daimyo Shimotsuki Ushimaru, a man rumored to be Roronoa Zoro’s father and One Piece’s next great villain. Although this cannot be confirmed until the return of Eiichiro Odahere we explain more behind this idea.

Ryokugyu and his partner Fujitora are known to have joined the marines within two years after the events of the Marineford story arc. Also, these two admirals are extremely friendly with each other, almost as if they were old friends, but with their clear differences. Even Fujitora’s attire and swordsmanship style is unlike any other Marine. His robe, wooden sandals and his sword wielding style have only been seen by other samurai in the land of Wano so far; therefore, it is reasonable to speculate that Fujitora could be from Wano. Relating this to Ryokugyu, it is plausible that the two of them came from Wano country at some point in their history.

It is speculated that Ryokugyu, the Green Bull, the new admiral of the Navy, could be Zoro’s father and the new villain of the saga.

This backstory would also tie into Fujitora blinding himself by experiencing an unnamed tragedy, possibly being the Beasts Pirates laying waste to Wano and its citizens. This would be a convenient way to prevent Fujitora, if he is from Wano, from recognizing Zoro or Kin’emon during the Dressrosa events.

However, the most important piece of evidence linking Ryokugyu to Ushimari is the crest he possesses. Ushimaru is seen with a bull engraved on his robe. Ushimari’s very name is proof in itself, as “ushi” means “bull” in Japanese, while Admiral Ryokugyu goes by the epithet “Green Bull”. Zoro’s primary color palette throughout the series has also consisted of the color green, and there is extremely strong evidence that Zoro is also from the Shimotsuki family.

The possible connection between Zoro and Ryokugyu in One Piece

Zoro’s hometown is literally called Shimotsuki Village and has strong ties to Wano.. Zoro and Ryokugyu were also introduced in exactly the same way. Both characters were presented as having fasted for an extended period of time, with Zoro trying not to eat for a month and Ryokugyu stating that she hasn’t eaten in three years. It is also stated multiple times within the series that Zoro and Shimotsuki Ushimaru bear a striking resemblance, even down to the way they use their swords.

For its part, Eichiro Oda has addressed the idea that Ushimaru is Zoro’s father in SBS Volume 101, saying that this theory is not true, but that Oda’s SBS has not always been true. The most recent example of this would be Oda saying that Kaido would not be defeated with a big punch and yet that is exactly what happened.

ryokugyu one piece

Admiral Ryokugyu had remained a complete mystery until the recent One Piece chapter 1052.

With Ryokugyu finally on his way to Wano, some light may be shed on this popular fan theory in the upcoming chapters., exposing whether or not he is actually Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Within a series as long as One Piece, there are likely to be countless theories that come up over time. Although not everyone gains ground, a frequently talked about theory is the idea that Admiral ‘Green Bull’ Ryokugyu is actually Shimotsuki Ushimaru, a legendary samurai from Wano, and Zoro’s father.

While not all fan theories have evidence behind them, there is a wealth of information to support the idea that Ushimaru is Zoro’s father and somehow became an admiral working for the Marines. Admiral Ryokugyu debuted in One Piece chapter 905, and Ushimaru appeared shortly after in chapter 953. However, we may have the real answer to this theory until One Piece is published again on a regular basis.
