These are the first images of Netflix’s One Piece live-action

If we compare frame by frame, we can see even Miss Love Duck in action

The new images showing the set of Netflix’s live-action One Piece were taken by the Twitter user @Risebito and published by the fan account @OP_Netflix_Fan. According to the description, the images were taken at the Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa, where the new adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s work is being filmed. Although the images were taken from a distance, we can appreciate some characteristic elements of the series such as some masts and sailboats under construction.

In fact, one of the most advanced constructions on the set is a ship that bears some resemblance to the Miss Love Duck, the pirate ship led by Captain “Iron Mace” Alvida, one of the first major antagonists of One Piece perhaps this is one of the first transcendent plot knots in live-action.

In addition, we can see the frame of a larger ship under construction, the shape and size of the ship have led to speculation that it could be the flagship of the Kreig pirate army, the Dreadnaught Saber. The first time this ship appears is in chapter 46 of the Eiichiro Oda manga, this was a gigantic galleon, with the head of a saber-toothed feline as a figurehead. After returning from the Grand Line, he was in total ruin.

The live-action of One Piece is getting closer than you imagine

The live-action One Piece produced by Netflix was first announced in 2017. The series is being produced by Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, the production company behind the recent live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop., the latter has raised some suspicions about the quality of the series (after it was canceled after a single season). The series will star Go’s lead actor, Youth! and Who Killed Sara ?, Iñaki Godoy will take the place of Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of The Straw Hat Pirates. This young actor will be joined on his adventure by Taz Skylar of Boiling Point as Sanji, the romantic feisty chef, and Sonny Chiba’s son Mackenyu, known for acting in other live-action anime adaptations such as Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter. , Chihayafuru, Pacific Rim: Uprising, etc, he will take on the role of swordsman Roronoa Zoro. For her part, Emily Rudd, famous for her performances on Fear Street and Hunters, will play Nami, the team’s elegant navigator, and finally, Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf, All Rise) will play the role of Usopp.

Steve Maeda (Lost, X-Files) and Matt Owens (Agents of SHIELD) are in charge of the script for the One Piece adaptation, so the series’ heavy weight falls on their shoulders. Also, with the popularity of this series, it is impossible not to think that this pair of creatives feel the grip of a decades-long fandom on them. It should be noted that all live-action anime adaptations are treated with a certain level of skepticism by their community of fans. Especially, the community around the Straw Hat Pirates passionately love their hobby.

But, maybe they can rest a little easier knowing that the original creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, will serve as executive producer for the live-action adaptation, so there will be no detail that does not escape his eye.. Oda is also known to be heavily involved in the production of the anime adaptation of his manga, and it seems that he will be equally entrenched in the new Netflix product. The manga artist previously released a statement about the series, saying, “It will take a little longer to finish this show, but we will continue to do our best to deliver a version that we are sure everyone will enjoy!”

Oda’s One Piece was originally published over 24 years ago and is now the best-selling manga series of all time, with around 500 million copies in circulation worldwide. The manga published both its 1000th chapter and its 100th compiled volume in 2021, while the anime adaptation aired its 1000th episode. Despite the series’ massive popularity, both Oda and publisher Shueisha have teased that the series is finally coming to a close, though they have not specified when it will happen..
